    Hello,

So, I have been flatbedding now for close to 4 yrs. I am working for a local company here in Washington State that is mainly a VAN company but there is 11 of us flatbedders. My dispatcher(no flatbedding exp) recently did a Safety meeting where they are making us work the way they want us to for safety reasons.

Example.... When I throw my straps, I baseball throw, always have, its just natural for me to do so BUT... I am required to hook throw my straps or I get fired.

Out of all the changes, this one bugs me the most and I am about to jump ship because of it and just wanted to know your guys opinions.

    Other changes:
No half straping (even if it goes all the way through the winch)
breaker bar must go all the way through the winch (cant use the lip)
must bend with your legs when straping and unstrapping with bar.

they are suggesting to throw the hook end? Many facilities require you to throw the strap end and hold the hook end. Throwing the hook is dangerous. The rest make sense. Half strapping puts a lot of wear on the straps and makes them more likely to break. Using the lip on the bar is somtimes a neccesity to get it tighter when you cant fit it in, but it does runt he risk of falling out easier and you hurting yourself. You should bend legs to prevent back injurys.

ya Richter... I dont really have a problem with the other changes.

No, they are not telling us to throw hook end first... they are literally telling us HOW to throw our straps. I through my straps like you would throw a football or baseball... they are saying we HAVE to throw our straps like a hook shot like basketball hook shot.

What is their reason for having you throw them like that?

I don't like that either, harder to be accurate and straight, more apt to put an unwanted twist in the strap too.

They say its "safer" and you dont risk injury with the hook throw?

Im 35, I have been throwing baseballs/footballs #### near my whole life with no injury. Not to mention, in my opinion, its slower and less accurate.

i guess my problem is that they are TELLING me how to do my job... like if they were telling me to walk different or something.

I wonder if they could acutally fire me for not throwing the starps the way they say? I would imagine they could but.... just stupid

Sounds kind of ridiculous to me. I suppose some "expert" told them or their insurance carrier they should do it that way.

I think they could fire you for not following their company policy.

It's called insubordination. Any company you go to you will have an over zealous safety man or someone that reads way too much into a potential problem.. He has to justify his job.

The same with a fuel manager. They come up with some of the stupidest things.

Just remember that payday. You want to pay me to do what? It's really not that hard to comply even if you don't agree. I'll jump up and down and run around that tree three times each strap if that's what it takes. It's not like the eyes are on you all the time. Don't sweat the little stuff if you like the rest of the job and pay.

You might have the four year itch? :) It use to hit me about every 7 months until I got over it.

It's kind of like a DOT officer can't find anything wrong with an inspection he starts looking for the little stuff. It's the same principle.

    baha Thanks this.
