You can drive 11 hours which has to include a 30 minute safety break and a 15 min pre and 15 min post inspection. That is 22 hours so then you start again for 2 hours so that is 13 hours of drive time in a 24 hour day. You can do this everyday. So you run out of time for the week on your 5th day.
What people fail to understand when they first start out is that Hours of Service rules are put in place for one reason only. And it ain't public safety. HOS rules are to keep our wages higher then they would be if we ran all the time. We can work 5 days a week and have 2 days off or we can work 8 hours a day forever. The companies cannot work us 16 hours a day 7 days a week. They have to higher more drivers which keeps our wages higher.
Newbies, run hard. Us older drivers run smart. Use the rules to your advantage. If you are planning on going home for a couple of days, run 13 hours a day and do the reset at home. If you are staying out for a while, start looking for a good parking spot after 8 hours and before 8 hours 45 mins. If you are on electronic logs, protect your time by going off duty every chance you get.
Plan everything. IF you don't you will end up like me and have 4 kids in college at the same time.
