I sat a whole day in 2010 waiting for the grapevine to reopen because I couldn't chain up and go over.

Makes perfect sense, I was snowed on in August Westbound on I-70 once, an hour later was in triple digit temps.

When you live out here and run local in a company rig waiting it out isn't an option and if you get pulled into a scale house without chains on the rack you'll very likely be put out of service.

I know how to chain up and used to carry them on my company truck. Now I have my authority and thinking should I get them or its just waste of money? If yes then how many chains should i get? 6?8?

    It is not you.

It is because the average driver does not slow down when the weather is bad.

Have you ever hit fog on the cajon or grape vine and watched the idiots pass you buy driving like it was a clear day?

Chains required in the rack running local, Not in so Cal

I sat 1 1/2 hrs. just this Friday when highway 30 was closed due to a fatality wreck, a pickup truck tried to pass a semi on the snow and ice.....bad result!

If you are running duals, the most you would need would be 3 bags (six single chains), CA is the only one requiring drag chains on both sides, all others allow one single drag (trailer group)....having them in your possession doesn't mean you are required to use them! Don't forget to have a bundle of bungee cords to boot!

Thanks Otherhalftw for info. I cant go to Cali anymore (because of my truck year) so dont have to worry about their crazy laws now. I'm 47 state carrier since next year... :) And yeah I do have bungees as I pull skateboard.
