I carry 12-25' 5/16" grade 70 and then 4 extras just in case one breaks or have extras just in case they are needed. I carry extra chains, binders, straps, edge protectors etc in the event something breaks, gets lost or simply need extra for a load that may require it because most of the time if not all, trying to find a replacement or extras while picking up a load is next to impossible. I learned my lesson from this after a load of numerous mixed size coils from a customer up in Michigan a couple years ago and only had 12 chains. Had to cut the load short because I needed 3 more chains to be DOT compliant. I also carry fire hose cut to 3' lengths to feed chains through to protect cross floor fore & aft movement of pallets on the front and rear of the load and also helps on some machine loads where trying to hold padding in place tends to be a PITA when you only have two hands so the load isn't scratched or damaged by chains. I've used safety binders, regular snap binders and ratchet binders and find ratchet binders to be the easiest to use. Just be sure if you use them, when you stow them away on an open headache rack to run a chain across the bottom set of hooks or they will work themselves loose and possibly fall off the truck. Lucky mine landed in the chain box underneath them instead of on the roadway because I was used to using a closed headache rack and using safety binders.
