Question from a Dispatcher

    Just a quick question that I'm sure will have some intresting repsonses. Why do drivers insist that they do "favors" for their dispatch? Its a job. You do as told. And the thank-you is your paycheck. But open for response

    I'm not sure what you're implying. If I understand your question .. A lot of drivers have this idea that if they brown-nose a lot, they will get preferred treatment and I suppose some "dispatchers" seek this out, but not many in my experiences. If I had to kiss butt or walk on eggs when dealing with dispatch in order to be treated "right", I'd go elsewhere. Some drivers though are convinced that they have to do this that and the other to insure a good week, but in reality it's probably not at all necessary ... they just have this weird notion they need to do this, so they do it, and think that's why they get whatever they get. I guess it has a lot to do with the "personality type", particularly of the driver involved that leads to this sort of [unnecessary] behavior.

    If you have to ask you do not have the ability to understand from the drivers point of view.

    It may surprise you to know how often a conversation w/dispatch starts with something like:
    "I really Need YOU to do me a favor"
    Or something along those lines

    or , if you do this run for me and take care of this customer, i will back it up with a longer/better paying run...or such and such dropped the ball and i really need your help...or i know you are due home, but i need you to help me out....i could go on.....???

    or..........dispatcher: pick up this trailer........Driver: the trailer has a flat.......what do you want me to do? Dispatcher: go fix it at acme tire repair

    ok......Driver: do you know that I don't get paid for this? Dispatcher: not my problem....

    How about you, mr. dispatcher, work 5-10 hours a week in the office and not get paid for it? Just your job right?

    Yep, last two responses sum it up. You may not do this, but many, many, many dispatchers do. However, I've had some that mean it. Those are keepers, and the kind that help retain good drivers.

    DOG-C...... That is about as close to what I'm talking about. Generally something like this will be brought up and be referrenced as said favor. Now I wouldnt tell any driver "not my problem" because at that point I've probably got 2-5 phone calls to make for delays, repairs, etc. So this is also a issue for the dispatch. Just something that comes up and you deal with it and move on to next item. Also I work for a company where I am salary. So there are many times where I work longer then the stated hours. Not to mention being on-call 24 hrs. Yes, it is my job. I take pride in it. At the same time you (any driver) choose the job they have. Noone made them be a driver. If it wasn't worth it, you wouldn't do it.
