growing up in the 60's in wyoming, nature put it there, let nature take it away was the snow removal plan...

Then the lawyers got involved, because people who did not understand the dangers of winter weather died on a remote stretch of US 30... They were from New Jersey.

The family won, and it became the state's duty to protect people from making ignorant mistakes... why we have road closed gates. Before that it was travel at your own risk.

Then that got expanded to the state must keep the roads open in bad weather, as people could not be inconvenienced by the weather, and have their local stores and fast food run out of supplies.

Of course it is the local citizens who foot most of the tax bill for all the equipment, man power, and the sand and salt. Now the state can not afford to pay overtime for all the hours worked in the winter months, so they use comp time... the highway department has twice as many active workers during the winter months, as the employees use up their comp time during the summer months. All so people are not inconvenienced, and protected from making ignorant mistakes.

LOL, I thought I had heard it all!! And this guy managed to get all the way thru training and was driving on his own?!?!?! Are they ever going to get smart enough to start 'weeding' out these idiots?? Like the guy that 'cut off' Hubby, that could have been a VERY expense accident if Hubby hadn't been aware of what was going on & if the lane had not been clear. He has also seen multiple Stevens' trucks tailgating in the area that he runs, particularly in Virginia on I-81.

Hello, TLea, how's things going?? How much snow do you have up your way? We have had a few early snowflakes, but probably won't get a 'real' snow until mid-January.

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving, & best wishes for a Merry Christmas & a Happy (and prosperous) New Year!!

Well the first snow storm in early october set a record, destroyed trees, and melted in 3 days... a total of 26 inches of wet stuff... then we had fall, until the first week of november... we are actually having winter this year. A snow storm from a dusting to a few inches every 3 to 4 days, and then the past 10 days we have not seen freezing, ie 32. Today it is 42 degrees warmer than it was sunday, the high was 24 today.

Oh and the wind was 40 to 65 today.

Me I am off the road, and enjoying life when and where I can.

I use those recruiting cards as something to start a fire with. I seem to get a new batch every time i get home. and i really doubt i will ever have the need to return to the fold.

Well, Hubby is driving regionally now, home every weekend. I'm doing the Walmart cashier thing in the evenings & watching our 2 yr old grandson during the day. I have a hard time every time I drop him off to start a new week because I really miss being on the road & us being together 24/7, but being able to see the little boss every day makes up for it somewhat. Glad you are finally at the point to just enjoy life TLea. STLVance, I think a very hot place would have to freeze over for us to come back. LOL

It is so very refreshing to know that there are folks out there who from first being behind the wheel of a rig just instinctively knew where everything was, how to interpret the information provided, and do so while also instinctively knowing where they were going, how to get there, and protecting the motoring public while doing so.

It is something a poor clueless idiot driver like me, who didnt manage to get weeded out during the training process aspires to.

Hopefully when I have years of road experience under my belt, I will always remember how it feels to be overwhelmed with the job and everything it takes, and have a little consideration and understanding before jumping up and automatically assumimg the cranial anal position on the namecalling bandwagon.

Sorry, but it has a drawing of an Oil Can on the Gauge and also has the word Oil written on it.
Has nothing to do with Instincts ... it has to do with common sense, and reading comprehension.

Will be back in Dallas tomorrow looking for a new trainer to finish my next three weeks. Gonna miss mine as he was awesome but can't fault him for wanting to take the time off he has earned with his family.

Agree Corp, it does boggle the mind in that instance, and in most of the cases Emulsified posts about, it doesnt make sense from a common sense standpoint. But, and this is a big but, sometimes what we see of the picture doesnt take lack of knowledge or experience into the equation. Its funny because its a stupid thing, but its embarrassing to those drivers out there who do have more than two brain cells to rub together.

In other more entertaining news, I have joined the ranks of Stevens drivers pulling FedEx trailers. From the look on the faces of those drivers around me, apparently its a good fit. I miss produce.
