And the debate continues but now i have something for you.........first thing, I'm a jug guy. I've seen too much not to be including the oil truck pull up at my change house and fill multiple drums, all branded different with the same hose. Never missed a beat either, just jumped from drum to drum.
The next thing is I'm on another forum, professional auto techs that work at domestic dealers. ( big 3 ) They constantly talk about 2 things, their oil being the "flavor of the month " and seeing many , many repairs because customers used the wrong oil. ( EG: Ford 4.6 and 5.4 OHC motors, oil recommendation is 5/20 but customers use 10/40 or 40wt....issue: 40wt too thick to pass through oil journals in OHC and cams burn up from oil starvation)
Next is my sons Tahoe, bought it new in 07. Son is perfect dealer customer too, paid asking price for truck and dealer performs every single repair / need including LOF and tire rotations. Truck has been in dealer twice for clogged oil screen and pump at his expense. Truck has been in two more times for cam failure. Sure looks to me that the "flavor of the month" is breaking down and creating sludge that plugs oil pump and starves cam and valve train.
Sure those are light trucks, and each could have a new crate motor for about 6k all done....but we can't and that's my point. This all maybe coincidence sure but there sure is a lot of it to ignore it.......and our engines are a far cry from 6k to reman........

I do my own services and buy in bulk. Its a lot cheaper when it comes down to it. I have spare jugs usually carry 3 extra gallons with me filled out of the drum just in case. Mobile delvac is let's see 16.50-19/gallon depending on where you buy it right? I can buy a 5 gallon bucket for $66 and a 55 gallon drum for $565. Yes you have the initial cost of the pump to transfer the oil, and what not but if you do your own services going from the jug is just costing you more than its worth. I still keep jugs around to fill and use when I'm on the road if I need it but other than that I use bulk. I will not go to the local T/A and have them put oil in my tractor out of a barrel. It will come out of the jug if its going in my motor. I don't trust them for the exact reason you stated.
I love watching guys pay for synthetic oil or an up charged oil and them not knowing what they're getting. Which is exactly why I do my own services at least I know what's going in that motor and I paid for it. Takes all of an hour to do if you don't have an hour to spare every 2 weeks or month or how ever often you service your truck there's something wrong. -
Jugs here get it for 12.99 . Do my own service because nobody loves me like I love me !!! Not even my mama !!
I believe that you get to know your truck better from being under it than you do being in it . You can't fix it before it breaks if you can't see it before it breaks . -
T-6 from the jug $22 .... Prices at Walmart are close to bulk #s. You can get 15/40 brand names for like $12 a gallon round #s.....
There is a comfort factor in opening a fresh jug....chalupa Thanks this. -
I opened a jug of Rotella T two or three years ago and was filling an oil filter before installation and noticed a chunk of something come out, it turned out to be a one half inch diameter ball bearing. I called Shell to report it and gave them the information printed on the jug, but they didn't seem to excited about it..... you just never know. I have bought it by the drum, gallon and bulk through the years, but we live in a different age now.
