FYI the westbound WA scale on I-90 west of Cle Elum will stop you on the scale and ask you how many chains you have. I've had it asked of me numerous times.

And how many chains at that time have you carried?

In Oregon you need two drag chains on the trailer, one on each side but I don't think it matters which tires. Washington state allows one drag chain that can be placed on either side but you also have to carry two extras with you in case the weather gets worse.

I think WA requires 9 individual chains for a 5 axle combination. 6 on the drives, 2 on trailer and a spare.
Edit: to carry, not necesaraly use.
I carry enough to chain 10 tires all year long. In BC you need to have them 7 months of the year and they'll just be in the way in my garage so they stay on the truck.

Washington, along with Colorado, and I have heard others are coming on board, allow Auto Socks in lieu of tire chains. A whole lot better option for most folks.
