I made a bad decision last night and kept driving across Illinois through the winter storm. I made it safe and sound but that does not change fact that it was likely the wrong thing to do, wrong to keep driving.
Kind of a weird thing to admit in an open forum like this but I do not truly understand the capabilities of the truck I am driving in winter conditions. I know driving too slow can in itself cause a road hazard, so I drive just fast enough so that I feel I am not doing that. I keep it slow, but if I was to start to loose control, I don't feel confident that I know what to do to regain it.
Is it just an matter of experience? What is the best way for a new driver to get training in proper winter weather driving? -
Good morning, everyone! Passport, I am glad that you are alright. What always worries me are the other vehicles on the road with all of you....and I hate to admit this but I was probably just as bad before the King started driving. When he is home I usually do all of the driving and he has taught me respect for big trucks .....by using a lot of backseat nagging!
Truly, it was ignorance on my part and something that is not taught in any drivers ed classes. I think they need to change that and educate new drivers ....and older drivers. I guess this is on my mind this morning because there was a bad accident here last night....started by someone driving too fast and spinning out on an icy bridge in front of a trucker. The driver put the truck into the guardrail trying to avoid hitting this car.
From a wife's perspective, passport, I know that you are a level headed calm driver .....always trust your instincts. If you don't feel safe, then it isn't.passport220 Thanks this. -
you are doing just fine passport
you need experience driving in weather
you get it by doing it
nervous is ok
ignore that some long nose O/O is in the left lane
ignore the wiggle wagons
do keep up to the trucks in granny lane
or your right you become the hazard
let common sense be your guide
spacing is critical so you can slow down without turning
but you have to push the edge of your comfort zone
but not to the point of frequent underwear changes
my 75 mph truck drove down 43 in WI at 50 today
and was bobtail at 45
now over here in iowa just wet time to gopassport220 Thanks this. -
Alright TransAM fellas, I could REALLY use your help. I just put an application in for the Shop Porter position posted on the website. I'm trying to find my way back into trucking and TA has already said they'd hire me if I had a refresher course but of course I dont have the money for that right now. I could make that happen with this job. My good friend Fester that lives in Grandview, MO has offered me his spare bedroom if I get the job. I've been completely honest with the application of course but we all know jobs tend to go to those who know someone on the inside. I don't know if any of you would be willing to put a word in for me but if so, please PM and I'll give ya my name.
Thanks -
Yea. I am stuck at the Petro on i80 & i280. Snowed about 4 inches and another 4 to 6 tonight. I am suposed to deliver to 3 stops in Toledo tomorrow.HometimeQueen Thanks this.

Well went to the doctor on Friday and I have diabetes. Have to go back on Monday to find out how bad but if it is really bad have to look for another line of work cause they will pull my medical card. At least the medicine the Doc gave me is starting to help with the symptoms. I hope the weight stays off over 40 pounds in a few weeks but I am changing my diet drastically, I never really ate that bad in the first place.
As always be safe out there drivers -
I know that isn't the news that you wanted, jaso....but the most important thing in all of this is your health. I am thankful that the meds are helping already and hope that the test results will be good for you on Monday. Keep us updated ....and we will all be hoping for the best. Continuing to send positive thoughts and prayers your way.
