I was wondering if you guys could give me some insite on UPS vs UPSF. Obviously one is parcel and the other is freight, but I want to know in the long run which one might be the better choice. I’m in my early 20s and looking for a place I can stay for the long haul and retire from. From what I’m hearing UPS is union and has great benefits, but it can take years and years to work your way up to a feeder driver. On the other hand it sounds like I can become a driver faster over on the freight side, but it would be less pay/benefits? Does anyone have any figures on how much of a difference it is in terms of pay/benefits? I know i'm going to have to work my way up no matter which side I decide to go with, but is parcel worth the long wait for the union/benefits? Any advice is appreciated.

To my knowledge, parcel is the place to be. It is union, you can make substantially more, and it will take you substantially longer to become a driver there. Over here on the left coast, ups freight doesn't really seem to pay any more then other freight companies, but their benefits are better.

From the UPS terminals I've read about and UPS drivers I've talked to, it's about a 10 year wait.

UPS Freight hires off the street.

Parcel is more money but it will be harder on your body. I'd rather do linehaul with Freight, easy money.

If I could go back to my late teens, early 20's, I would have started working part time with UPS, then put in my time to become a delivery driver, and then with enough seniority become a Feeder driver...

In my area its a 7 year wait to drive a package car and over 20 for a feeder. With UPSF they will hire off the street. I got hired right on a bid so I'm lucky.

UPS parcel is better for the long run. Although being a package driver will take its toll on you. I did FDX Ground and that was a pain. My dads friend has been there 18 years and told me his knees are shot but he's also in NYC. He almost has the time for a feeder though. There are a lot of opportunities with Parcel though.

UPSF right now has some issues. We are currently still waiting for a new contract as it was turned down a few months ago. My terminal the supervisors are fairly cool as long as you do the right thing. Also theirs a lot of old overnite management still as well. We are currently the highest paid LTL company so that's a huge plus. Drivers do have to work the dock but as you gain more seniority you don't have too. It's not hard but it gets tiring. To be honest I'd rather work the dock then go into P/D again.

Both companies are teamsters. Both give you uniforms. Both have GPS and other gadgets in the trucks. Like I said do the right thing they don't bother you.

If you want to go directly into class-A driving then the package side won't be the ticket. It's a long arcing career path for most guys to get into those cushy feeder jobs.

It varies at each location. I was recommend by 6 current people, different jobs in the company. It's a small world and networking ( friends ) for a decade. I finally gave in and accepted the job. ( UPSF )
Turned down UPS years ago, Wanted experience on various equipment and I was not mature enough as a driver to meet the demands.

I should have started UPS. Instead of UPSF. crap happens and mature enough now to know when i'm getting screwed :)

Parcels work your butt, worth the pay. Also freight is worth the pay. Depends on the person on what they want. it's no right or wrong. Both UPS and UPSF pays well.

ETA: doesn't answer your question 100%. Not a recruiter saying UPS is perfect. You just have to know what your limits / goals is.

UPS pays well. you will not starve and can have vehicles /family / house on the well earned income.

Next goal become a UPS pilot. UPS is a retirement job. worth every experience
