Where is everyone #2!!

Had one of my guys pick up a load in Columbus,Ga on a Saturday morning. Heading to Washington state, 11 wide, less than 20k, big money, gravy load. I told him that he needs to be through Tennessee before the sun went down. He has been waiting since Friday afternoon, truck stop across the street. But he waits til he gets loaded before he gas to stop to get something to drink. He calls me on Sunday from that TA in Antioch,Tn. I don't say anything. What can I say? Worse thing was, this was during daylight savings time.

I wouldnt have have stopped for nothing til I was in Kentucky Saturday night. I would have been aiming to deliver that load on Tuesday. I used to try to be nice and sociable, but once I make delivery plans, I have to go. If a driver says, "Let me run with you", I am cool with that. When he needs to pull over, I will tell him that I need to keep moving and wish him safe travels.

Dont do the babysitting.

 

Hard to top Spam. I love it fried for breakfast or on bread with mayo for a sandwich.

I used to need to eat at least 3 times a day, or I'd get hunger pains. Then after running medical waste and doing 30-40 stops a day in Chicago, I adjusted to only eating once a day. Nowadays, I grab a coffee and a sausage biscuit in the morning and then don't eat again till about 8pm when I stop for the day. But you also have to remember that I don't usually sit anywhere for longer than loading or unloading. Rarely do I spend a day "waiting". If I'm in the truck, them wheels better be turning. And I have come to detest OTR driving. I'll do it when the rate is too good to pass up, but I'd rather Put in 14hrs moving 3 loads a day and spending a few hours loading and unloading.

I carry a 6 pack of 20oz waters and a box of granola bars. That's it

 

I wouldn't but I can't really say no. We just got 2 new step decks to service the crane customer and so we got 2 new drivers that have never done crane work, so they put me in charge of making sure everyone gets loaded and that the new driver secures his load properly. When I don't have a load they put me to work in the yard or the office, so I can't really complain, its a trade off I'm willing to make.

I've built my reputation to where I'm the first to get offered loads because I do whatever it takes and I'm a team player. Today I got a $150 "Sunday call out" for a 2 hour job on top of the regular pay. I like being the go to guy so I'll keep doing the extra things that make me well liked in the office. I really like this company, they've been really good to me and I like where its going.

 

My birthday dinner choice when I was a kid was Spam hotdish. I cant remember exactly what was in it but I remember Spam, chow mein noodles, cream of mushroom soup and celery. My birthday is coming up next month maybe I should call my mom up and ask her to make it for me.

 

I am all for being a team player...I just need the rest of the team to show up at the same time.

We'll I've said it in just the past week or two about drivers out on the road ESPECIALLY in the northwest in the winter without being prepared.

I carry 10 gallons of Walmart water ($9.00 and that will allow a person to survive for almost 3 weeks in an emergency) and enough non-perishable food to last at the very minimum 1 week. I used to not carry more than a couple bottles of water and some sort of snack but 20 years ago I lost an alternator on a 2 lane in Wyoming and aside from almost freezing to death I was there for 16 hours before someone finally stopped. I had no water, only a 1/2 small bag of sunflower seeds and nothing else. Since that night my truck doesn't move without everything I need to survive for at least a week period.

 

That's the thing, Never knowing what will happen.
All we can do is try and be prepared the best we can.
