Actually, gross sales has everything to do with everything.

Do you think your bottom line will look better at $1.50/ a mile or at $2.50/ a mile?

Would you rather gross $1000 a day or $750?

Companies are always measured by their gross sales.

Personally I would rather gross $750 a day on 250 miles rather than a $1000 on 600 miles. Gross doesn't mean much without knowing the cost of operation.

I agree but that doesn't take into account the operating ratio. How many cents it costs to earn a dollar. But once you've mastered that, the only way to increase the bottom line is by increasing the top line. Either by working harder or smarter.

It's good to aim for as high a rate as possible but you may not always get it and you'll always have overhead and household expenses that NEED to be covered.

I'm also interested in this as I am a company driver as well looking to buy and lease on to where I currently work. I've been grossing right around 1k/week home every night and every weekend running on avg 3200 miles a week. I look at our O/O pay and it seems like I'm missing an opportunity to make A LOT of money being that the O/O run the same loads I am running now. I know they have more costs associated with their side and I was a diesel mechanic in our shop before I started driving so I know parts aint cheap. I'm getting all my finances in order so I can go on a truck hunt for a nice 389. I'd like a 379 but we can't lease anything on more than 5 years old.

I am confident eventually people will use the search feature of this site. And figure out that mileage based pay is for suckers. More miles does not = more money. Period.

Chasing miles sucks! I would rather get paid per load...

My company only does pay-per-mile so it is all I have. Therefore, more miles = more money. Ask my wife about the check I got from thanksgiving that had 1400 miles on it vs my normal 3200 mile check. :biggrin_25522:

He was/is referring to O/O's or L/P drivers...Not company drivers. When you control your truck, you should definitely use % to get paid. When you work for the company, and drive their truck well than, you have no choice.
