Your right, I redid my math and had made a mistake. The 1st leg with the DH is going to make me 1.64pm and that isn't good. The 2nd leg will make me, with 37 mile DH, 2.50 pm The 3rd leg will give me 1.83 pm and was ok, when my numbers were better on the 1st leg.
Back to the drawing board. thanks fortycalglock

I misread the d/h part.Kind of threw me when I saw your option #3. I agree,a lot of d/h for short load. my mistake. keep trying.

Short hauls can make some $ but not at those rates. Key is to charge 2 way money and get something coming back/going somewhere else from the load you're on. "Short haul premium"
thats what I do. If I can't get a load to or from where I need to be, it's built into the rate for one way empty anyway.

Not only the deadhead, but the time involved. $5 pm is great but if your only doing 70 miles a day, you'll go broke. A little while ago I did 8 loaded miles for $1,000, which is my daily rate for under 300 TOTAL miles short haul work. Good rates are a mix of rate per mile, length of haul, time involved, and where it's going. A good rate coming out of New England isn't going to look like a good rate going into New England

Ill say it again, If you know what you doing you could make serious money. You want the secret, say NO. Have respect to your work. Have connects and know your area. Book and go is stupid business. Texas right now sucks, trust me my father is my direct connect in Laredo, He tells me their too many trucks and people are doing cheap freight to move before the holidays (he ons a yard). Summer time i make great money out of Laredo. Midwest and south East is the area to stay in this time of the year. Snow and and cold weather keeps the cheap haulers out. 4-6 loads a week per truck avg 580 miles avg of 80 miles DH making $2.30 a mile avg for legal Step/Flat loads. Thats good business.

I remember when I Had My Own Truck I Thought I Was Doing Something When I Hauled Outbound For $2.14 A mile Then Grabbed What I Could grab To Get Me back To The Barn. That was when diesel Was A Little Over A Buck. It Takes A While To Figure This Industry Out.

Give me time brother, I am just getting started. I will be where you are some day, Lord willing that is. I am knew to Load Boards and finding my own loads but, not ignorant, just not skilled yet. My goal at first, will be to run around 300 miles a day. I haven't pulled a skateboard since mid 2011 so, got to get back in that game, plus find loads. My break even point is 1.67 pm and that pays the driver a $35,000 salary. Sure, I know to put away every extra penny I can, to prepare for the down times. I will stay out until I get by the house by accident to get the system down pat. I have been preparing for this a few years and I do not want to fail. I will take any advice you have to offer, thank you.

On my 1st post, with legs, my average without using the 1st Leg#2, was 1.99pm Not terrible for me.

I spent from the point FortyCalGlock pointed out my error, til now finding better runs. Instead of a triangle, like I was shooting for, I have found 4 good legs that if all scheduling works out right, may be doable. These 4 legs together will create an average of 2.46pm with only 100 DH miles total. With a total of 1150 miles run. That equals out to $2829 to the truck for those 4 loads. I am hoping to do way better than that, I just wanted to show what I came up with. I am going to call the agents for these areas tomorrow and see what they say. A lot of freight coming out of the areas I have found. If the schedule can be done I should be able to do 1.5 rotations in a 5 day period, and more, once I get back to where I was securing and what not. I will learn this, I just don't want to start out running all over the place. I am not that experienced yet in where the good areas are. Plus, I have to get back in shape and get past the learning curve so, I will take it slow and easy in the beginning and as my time securing the load gets quicker, pick up the pace.
