I have no clue about a cb radio for my husband. He will soon be starting his new career in truck driving which has been a lifelong dream of his. I want to get him something for Christmas that he will need/want for his truck so I need help please!
    Thank you!

That is very thoughtful of you. How much do is in your budget for a CB? You will have to go to a truck stop to get one, unless you live close to a CB Shop and you can Google that in your area. A Cobra 29 is a good start and to your question as to whether he needs one, I say yes. They can save a truckers life, they will help him get alerts from other drivers on weather, road conditions and if he has a problem that he can't see from his mirror's, they will be able to let him know, so he can pull over and fix the problem and not, get a citation by the DOT.

You many want to get him a cooler, 12v to plug in the truck. This way he can eat more of your food and not truck stop crap.

You can also get him a gps, a road atlas, pens, sleeping attire like blankets and what not.

It depends what your budget is.

A CB kind of grows with a driver. The older they get the nicer the CB they invest in.

I would start out at a minimum with a Cobra 25 NW or Cobra 25 WX NW ST.

That's a small unit but serves the purpose well for a new driver. The NW stands for night watch for a well lit panel to see at night which he will be driving at night. WX has the NOAA weather bands.

Here is the line up any is fine 25 and above. The 148 GTL is the Cadillac and one you keep a long time.
If he likes the outdoors he might like the 29 LX Camo. I know I do, you can buy it for me! :)

Okay a step up from Cobra is the Galaxy line. Buy him the DX 959 and he'll love you forever. But they have newer models that recently come out.

Shop on eBay and Amazon you can probably get a better deal. Sometimes the truck stops put them on sale if you live near one.

One thing he'll need is a good pair of leather gloves for fueling and other work.

Thanks so much for the reply! My budget is around $100 to $200. His truck has a cb but I want him to have a new one. I figured he would want/need one but I don't want to ask and give myself away! He loves CB's. Every time we use his dad's truck and camper he has to have the cb going....drives us nuts!

He has a refrigerator in his truck. Do you think he would still need a cooler? What about a small coffee pot? We have a GPS he can use but he hates them. Road Atlas is a good idea! Recommendations?

Thank you so much for the information! My husband has been around trucking his whole life. His uncle owns a trucking company. His sister-in-law is a big wheel at a transport company but we will get no help or support from them. Everyone still against it. What the hell do they want us to do? Starve?! Sorry....touchy subject. Anyway, he wanted to start driving when we first met, but his parents forbade it. Totally against it so he settled and we eventually became chicken farmers(like his dad.) :( Long/short of it, after 20 years in the chicken business, we lost our farm and home. We are starting over now and he found a really nice used truck. He has done the work needed on it(not much) to make it road worthy and now he is going to try and do what HE wanted so long ago.

Thanks so much for the help!

I like the 979 but read the first review in the link you posted. An upgraded mic will be a big improvement on a fine radio.

If he has a fridge he won't need a cooler. Let him know that a gps can be HELPFUL, it is another tool. I carry a map, gps, phone numbers, cell phone and a laptop.
