If you could change the Logs?

About the only thing I do LIKE is the 36 (Canadian) restart. Back in the bad old days..pre-1985 where I live) we had no log books, we all ran like one poster put, till we felt the need to stop. We all had the ability to gauge when we needed to stop & rest & did so. WAY safer IMHO. If we must have HOS rules, then they should be done by the mile/kilometer. Because THAT is the way we are PAID! The way the current rules are written has NOTHING to do with safety! There have been more truck accidents due to driver fatigue since the new rules came into effect than ever before.

There have been a couple of law suits started up here for just that reason & have heard rumours about the "new" rules being thrown out & the old rules coming back into effect. Have also heard that down south there you guys are running into the same problems.

Usually BS as far as I'm concerned, just another source of revenue for the gov't.

 

Biggest trouble I can see here is each province has their own set of rules for those who stay within their home province plus the federal rules for if you leave. Personally, I think they are all just a ready source of revenue, the ones I like the best are the "North of 60", they are the most lenient, with the most time....not many even know of them & the southern DOT guys get drove crazy with them, alot of explaining to do when they see 15 hours driving on your log sheet...perfectly legal where I run!

 

I feel we need to be able to stop the 14 hr rule. for the above stated reason, if your tired and need to take a nap you should not have to short your log to do it. Don't misunderstand me, if I'm tired I'm going to take a nap and my boss will not say a word about it! He and the customer both have phones and can reschedule. He only asks that I give them enough lead time to get it covered. But I also realize that not everyone out there can do that. Well yes they can!!!!! refuse to drive tired. No load is worth your life or someone elses. They make a little device called a dispatch buster, works miricles. they change their tune when they find out you have them on tape telling you you have to get the load there no matter what. Stay safe!!!!

 

Drivers should not be fined for log book violations. They should only be placed out of service.

Log books should have two lines, On Duty and Off Duty.

Drivers should be allowed to be on duty for 24 hours, in any combination, within any 36 hour period and there should be no limit on weekly hours.

Imposing a 70 hour limit serves no useful purpose other than to cause drivers to falsify logs.

But, log books have nothing to do with safety, so they will never be used for that purpose. Their primary purpose is to enrich someone other than drivers and the more restrictive and complicated, the more that goal is achieved.

Log books are called comic books for real good reasons. They are a joke.

 

Instead of 11 hours driving and no driving after 14, make it "14 hours to do whatever, then 10 hours off." So if you can drive 13 hours and only have an hour worth of stops, great! If you want to drive 6, take an hour break, drive another 7 or 8, you should be able to. I still agree that you need 10 hours off. But 14 hours to do whatever would be much easier to calculate and it would allow more work to get done. I don't think it makes anything anymore dangerous either.

 

I have driven for 11 hours straight without stopping. Thankfully, there was a restroom available at the delivery point. I had a tight deadline to meet. It was that day by 7 or there for 2 days waiting.

I was stiff and could barely walk.
