I just hauled a broker load from Chicago Ridge, IL to Vickery, OH. I got $800 for it. And when I unloaded it the guy told me he paid $1200 to get it shipped 270ish miles. I told him I'd do it for $1000 if he called me when the next one is ready. Shorter then 300 miles needs to pay a premium

 

agreed, you have to get paid for the pickups and deliveries as well as your time spent booking the loads. Thinking only in terms of mileage pay is deceptive. My rule of thumb is $250 + $2.50/mile for a one pick/one drop ($100/additional stop). It's situational, honestly I don't get that much as often as I'd like but doing it that way creates a graduated mileage pay from $5/mile for 100 miles to $2.62 on 2000 miles.

 

For that $250+2.50 a mile start at anything over 300 miles or is that just across the board?

 

I'd say from 0. Load going 50miles=$375 not too bad if you can get a couple a day

 

Last week I pulled a load from Beaumont,TX Sorrento, FL 866 miles 37,000lbs strap and go $3,000 or $3.46/mi before I even picked up the load I started looking for a load out 90% of the loads paid $1/mi or paid $1.40/mi going somewhere out of my way. I dropped and put the truck in the wind 530 miles to Thomasville, AL, everyone at the truck stop said I was nuts deadheading over 500 miles I said why I get 6.8mpg empty and 5.4 loaded. I found $1,700 on a load back to Houston 570 miles or $2.98/mi.

So I could of done 1,780 miles at $2.13/mi all miles or 1,977miles at $2.37/mi all miles so for 200 miles I made a extra $1,000 and only spent $1,400 in fuel I saved $200 just running empty.

just because your in a spot with cheap freight don't mean you have to stay there or haul it, move on to somewhere else with a better lane with better paying freight. I have been to Florida three times in over 11 years every time it's been well over $3/mi I know what the market is going in and won't go for less if the deal isn't right it's just not right pass on it move on, same with Denver or el paso get your money going in and know what your all mile target is.

 

I've always though of it the same Bayou, go in like you said for well over 3 per mile and leave the area like Florida for greener pastures and find that load paying 2.00+ a mile instead of that buck a mile sheot coming out of the sunshine. Let the other people go broke hauling 40K+ for pennies.

 

3+ a mile coming out Beaumont,tx.. wow ! lucky, I only get $3.00 plus a mile in the summer coming out of Laredo. legal loads and that because im Family.. If not they will screw me like the screw most people down there.
