It was not a slow time per say... it is just their business model... i know you are new to trucking but it is all about maximizing your time and averitt does not do that..

I was never preplanned for a load. After i would deliver a load no matter how short it was i would have to wait until the next day for another load. Often times they would have me go to one of their ltl terminals and wait until midnight to see if they needed a backup truck to cover any loads for them. You never got paid for that and if there was no load, which there rarely was, then you had to wait until miday the next day to see if you could get a load.

A good company will have you preplanned for your next load before you ever complete the load you currently have. That way as soon as you are empty you roll to your next load and get the most out of your hours of service.

The company i work for,Gordon Trucking, i average 3200 miles a week at .40 cents per mile. And i dont waste time here. Averitt could never get close to that.

Does sound like you had a bad experience, for the most part I have a couple of loads pre-planned and they try to have you set up for the weekends if you are running. Things change, maybe sometimes not for the best, but stating they're not worth the time now from your experience several years ago seems a bit extreme. Don't take it personally, just my opinion from a current Averitt employee. There are negative comments in the Gordon thread as well. At the end of the day there are no perfect companies to work for, they all have something about them that someone has an issue with. It is what it is and take it one day at a time.

Glad to hear things are going well for you at averitt...

I dont think i ever stated it would not be worth your time.. the op was looking for input before making a decision.

You are correct that my experience was several years ago and perhaps they have corrected some things..

I did also leave out the part about my neighbor who really liked working for them lost his house for some reason and i havent spoken to him in awhile.

I think it was more a personal matter...ie. divorce...

It does sound like the op has reasonable expectations and may do well there...we all start somewhere...

Thanks for you inputs...is that a word? :) I'm just trying to make the best, informed decision possible. There's a couple of tanker companies locally also that take newbies. It's either them or Averitt.

DG...if you get a chance read my thread entitled I Start With Averitt In January 2012. I was a driver for them for 18 months. I give the good and the bad. Most was very good. I loved it there and if I ever go back to driving it will be back at Averitt.

    dg37663 Thanks this.

Experienced tanker drivers make better money than dry van. If you have the opportunity to learn that , you may find it a far better choice down the road.

I'm definately going too check them both out and compare it all. Tanker is definately my #1 pick but it's slow right now here and I want to get back a working. This retirement isn't what everyone thinks. I got lucky and did my time and got out at 53.
