    Grease yer 5th wheel good. If you are sliding or jacknifing you are going too fast if it's 5 mph. 2.4 million miles, probably 30 years in Co, NM, UT, and Wy and I never heard of drag chains. Something a drag Queen wears maybe? I have been stuck 4 tiems in a big truck, once ina Co truckstop with about afoot of snow on the ground and I backed my trailer into a mucdhole, once at a cattle chute when it started raining real hard on caliche, and once whe it was raining in Az and I was out of the cab and my truck and trailer slid sideways into a field just with the movement of cattle, once oa a dirt road in NM they had just graded with soft shoulders at about midnight, met another cattle truck and the edged caved in and I went into a ditch.

    We used to go over I 70 and up 6 around the tunnel year round with Class A Explosives, Bombs Rockets, Phosphorous, grenades, dynamite and Nitro Glycerin. Even hauld the projectiles for the 16 inch guns on the New Jersey for the Figured if we wrecked we'd be talked about for 50 years anyway.

    i'll argue with your point.

    6 people thanking you and your point is wrong.

    use the jakes on ice. my 4 drives LOCK up. and THAT'S what causes the trailer to jacknife. cuz now the truck is sliding sideways.

    trailer locking up??? how can that be when the brakes aren't even being used???

    I served 2 years on the USS New Jersey (BB-62). My battle station was 3 decks below the main deck & beside the forward 16" gun mount. Whew...when that mount fired, sometimes even get paint chips flying off the overhead and bulkheads.

    What you describe is a tractor knife. Reread my first line, and the Op's posts.

    Back to your point; Your point is valid, but which are you more likely to recover from, a tractor knife vs. trailor knife? Its been my experience in a trailer knife, I have zero control over the trailer until the wheels begin turning or trailer bumps a curb. In a tractor knife caused by jake, I maintain the ability to steer into the slide, and clutch or the accelerator to regain traction.

    Its also been my experience the drives are less likely than the trailer to break traction. You also have the ability to only use 2 of your drives for breaking using jake by removing the axle lock, or 1 drive by removing the pwr diverter, both of which will almost never cause a tractor slide.

    I always run my jake. There's three stages to it. If it's real bad out or I'm going pretty slow, I knock it down. People get all freaked out over the jakes being on, even in rain. I just don't get it. I've never had an issue with it. But I also drive at speeds that are safe for the conditions. There's no reason to be scared of using your jake brakes. It's there to assist you.
