I got a 3300hp and Wilson 2000 ant. and it works pretty good so I wanted to set the swr and make sure it was working right..i got a new (older) swr meter it has the swr and power meter.. the instructions don't say to put it on 1 or 40 like I have heard from others so I didn't I left it on 19..anyway I keyed the mic turn the knob so that the arrow would be on set the press the swr button on the meter and now the arrow goes to about 5 on the swr ... do I need to put the radio on 1 or 40 if not what do I need to do cut my ant......I had it setting all the down in the mount and was told to left it about 1/4 and most work like that and it made a big difference but I would like to get it as close to right as possible..

This place is like this at times, I would offer some help but am relatively new at this myself, don't want to give any bad information.

You'll need ch1, ch40 to determine if the ant is too short or long, when you have these channels near equal ch19 will be correctly adjusted.
I'm not familiar with your meter, but if it has a calibrate option do this before swr every channel, and everytime you adjust. If 40 is higher than 1 your ant is long. If 1 is higher than 40 its short. make your adjustment and do everything again until 1 and 40 are near the same. -
What's your Swr reading? Is your antenna, long or short?

Well it is the holidays and I don't have time to give detailed instructions either. But if you check youtube I'll bet you can find a video on how to do it.......

Never used a meter like that one but that type all pretty mush are the same, turn the Mic. Gain all the way down, key the radio use the set knob to set the meter at 0, Set to SWR key mic and see what you have.
To adjust them, go to ch. 1 see what you have then go to 40 and see what you have. And don't forget to set the meter every time you change channels very important. Now if you are higher on 40 than on 1 you will need to trim the whip. Do no cut off more than a 1/4 inch at a time, you can't put it back on if you cut off to much. A small set of bolt cutters, or a cut off wheel work great, if you don't have those the Redneck way works too, line mans pliers and a hammer. If you are higher on ch.1 you will need to rase the antenna in the mount as you said it was bottomed out. But you never said what it is on, or how it is mounted. You might have grounding problems that need to be addressed before you start cutting on your whip. hope this helps.Cetane+ Thanks this. -
This is a very simple explanation on how to use the meter.
