Do any of you ever stand on the step when backing?

When my brother was driving for Millis,he told me the one about a driver out west who didn't want to stop. He put the cruise on,stepped out on the running board to wizz and hit a large pothole.he watched his truck drive on down the road [ for a little while anyway. ] Urban legend ?? maybe, but funny regardless.

NHL_fan, Dinomite, Joetro and 1 other person Thank this. -
Every trk ive driven the mirrors were mounted to the door.Sometimes you have to adjust them when backing then readjust when driving. This is why before getting issued a trk you do a pretrip, make sure everything is up to your standards. You get in the trk adjust the mirrors and make sure it suits you before taking it off the lot.

If you'll notice the op is not a trucker and knows nothing about backing. So of course he'll come up with that assumption.Which is understandable.

well, ask yourself ... would you back this way on a CDL road test with a CHP testing officer? If the answer is no, then perhaps the OP has at least a partially valid point.

I just got out of a long nose Pete and backing that thing up was a nightmare. Trying to see around the stacks was almost impossible. I can understand doing what he did but I'd be too scared to do it myself.
truckon Thanks this. -
I drive almost exactly the same truck as the video. Let me say that anything beyond a very shallow angle from straight is tough to see where the trailer is going. The stacks get in the way and the mirrors aren't very helpful either, you can't lean far enough forward to get a wide view. The old Pete 379 I drove with door mounted mirrors was awesome.
