UPS vs UPSF

Truckload is a different division and I have no clue on the pay scale. If you see our trailers being pulled by a truck without any UPS stuff on it, its a contractor. The owner operated UPS trucks are just that, they technically work for UPS but own the truck (not sure how all that works). Once we get the contractors out the openings will be there.

 

Upsf/truckload is the old Overnite Special Services division--& all yall r runnin into bout getting on---Is what it has ALWAYS been in the freight biz--with very few exceptions---u start part time or casual as it used to be called--build ur seniority on the xtra(casual)board--make NO enemies and as a position becomes available you may or may not get it--since they r not obligated to move casual to full time by seniority---
Many things have changed in that biz over the years---but u r still dealin w/a teamster shop&although the rules have changed considerably granted the co much more leeway in terms of work assignments split boards etc.....most of the old rules still apply•---&if you are looking for more insight have you gone down to the hall?

Does anybody know how the pay is for a dedicated otr van or flatbed driver at ups and how is it working for them in that area ?

 

Hammer put it in a nice way. The Contractors is taking freight at a lower cost and putting us ( me ) ( low on the totem pole from working 100% )

I'm hoping we get them out... Cant tell you how much of our stuff goes on contractors trucks... Imvhoping for layover runs but the senior guys said they would run more HRS turns before that happens, but hey that's still 474 miles for the day and at least two hour clock time.

 

The question is...how much more does upsf pay then other LTL? Conway, abf, r&l, fedex are about 15minutes and upsf is about 30-35minutes. Would I save money in gas?

 

"Buster Brown" is the Holy Grail of driving jobs. My wife has been a sorter at UPS for 20 years and had many chances to go into driving, but the part time gig is pretty awesome after 20 years so she stays there and lets daddy pay the rest. Can't blame her...6 weeks paid vacation, paid holidays, pension, best benefits I've ever seen...all for about 17-20 hours a week!! If you're young, go "brown"...you have time to decide and all the jobs there are good in the long run.

 

I saw full time P&D and road driver jobs for UPSF on the upsjobs website last summer in Seattle when I was job shopping. Seattle is a hot market though...especially during busy season. They called me back about both positions, but I went to OD due to better starting pay and no dock work, and no graveyard.

 

Since the ratification of the new contract, there will be a new division of UPS Freight LTL, and it will be a Union position. BUT... it will be significantly less pay/benefits as the ROAD DRIVER classification.

|It will be called |LHD (Line Haul Driver) classification. As i understand, there might not be any hiring off the street any more. Either they will offer city ,or dock CDL the road position first, then after that they will go to the LHD board. So again, as I understand it, you will have to hire on as a LHD driver first, then wait your turn to become a ROAD DRIVER.

If I am incorrect, i welcome any UPSF employee to clear up any false statement.

 

It hasn't been completely clarified as to where they will come from, ie. Off the street, dock cdl etc. It is fact though that they will be paid much less than we are. Benefits as we were told would be the same for them. As far as regular hiring practice for the dock, you have to have a cdl and any current dock worker that wants to obtain one will be afforded the opportunity through the company. Again all of this was relayed by the B.S. artist union reps so take it all with a grain of salt.
