failure to secure load

    I'll just say one thing. To lose a complete axle with 4 tires, on the road...the driver should be on his knees giving thanks that there were no fatalities. Axles DO NOT "just fall off".

    Dude, the entire issue of containment and securing the load is to prevent the cargo from MOVING. IF the boxes were falling out of the rear of the trailer when the door was opened, then the boxes were moving or could have been one of the causes of this wreck through instability.

    Part of the law states "the distribution of the load " which means if the load was done in such a way as to put weight on the axle that could have caused this to occur it is an offence under the current regs.

    The manufacturer definitely gets involved in some situations. I worked for Wabash for quite a while and experienced several of these situations. We'd have a team that would come in an investigate the manufacturing process to find out what caused the issue to happen.

    Hubbers forgot to put cotter pins on the castle nut for the hub often. A lot of trailers would lose their wheels while rolling down the line because of this well before they hit the road. A system to ensure this didn't happen wasn't put in place until a trailer lost both hubs on one side going down the road and caused the truck to roll.

    Have a guy one day come back and looking at my welding machine settings. As a welder there's nothing that pisses you off more than someone messing with your machine after you've dialed it in. I ask him what he's doing. Tells me the axle welders cranked their machines up to full blast so they could weld faster. Knowing the axle welders, I know they did this so they could walk around more and talk instead of working. When you apply to much heat to metal you make it brittle. The company found out because multiple trailers lost axles going down the road.

    That's just a couple examples of road incidents that the company became involved with. There were others. There's a reason I've never worked for a company that pulls Wabash trailers.
