I would much rather run singles. The rides a lot better, the weight is a lot less (fuel savings, can load more freight etc.) only have 4 tires to check instead of 8. Less noise. Plus they just look cool.
Richter Thanks this. -

High rolling resistance dual recaps to new low rolling resistance dual virgin tires can show the same improvement. You would need to compare apples to apples to get a true savings, including service calls for a flat, rim damage, ect.
There is also sub-concious fuel saving driving habits when a person changes something to increase fuel savings that plays into the amount of gained fuel mileage. I consistently got .75 to 1.5 mpg better than the other driver on the same truck doing the same loads every day, 5 days a week. Driver has a lot to do with fuel savings.
I'm not saying that wide singles won't save fuel, I'm sure they do. I just don't think the amount is much when comparing low resistance duals vs low resistance singles, then adding in associated cost road service and wheels when flats occur, which they eventually will. Then you have to also look at how many miles a wide single will last as compared to a set of duals, and the cost to buy singles compared to duals. Some numbers will favor singles, some duals. It's the total cost at the end of each tires life cycle that counts.
Like I posted earlier, this is the third go around in my career than wide singles have been pushed on trucking, and the last two times the long term cost was too high for them to be worth it. Things may be different now and they may work, but Conway is switching back for some reason.Joetro Thanks this. -

That is pure garbage for you to think or speculate i need to change for the times........I remember in the 90's some marketing guru tried telling me to invest my money in additional equipment, Yeah right, lol. It would have put me right outta business..
Same with now.......You really think I should "change my ways because you think its a good idea??
Like I said..........Lets compare profit/loss statements in 5-10 years.
Every time a 'seasoned trucker' tries changing due to marketing schemes, governmental know it alls..Or College economists.. They Lose everything they worked for.
Be a Cold day in He11 before I let that happen.
Why dont you go push a 'Go Green' Campaign while youre at it.... Chrissakes, This industry has allowed way too many npeople in opening their mouths that know NOTHING about the business.Joetro Thanks this.
