Cali, NYC and Washington DC can kiss my ###. Sure there is money to be made there but I'll be running out of Dallas/OKC and there is plenty of work not related to those places. Weather or not I'll make money is yet to be seen. As far as "cheap truck" is concerned, yea I agree with ya. The ones I'm looking at are under 700k miles so they're not totally destroyed. I'm lucky to not have a wife/kids/mortgage while trying to get in this. I pretty much just need to eat and keep the truck going and I'll feel successful! A buddy of mine has 3 trucks, one is down but he paid about 20k for 2 and 4k for one that he had rebuilt completely. He runs inter-modal containers out of the KSC rail yard. Gets home most nights and still makes enough money to keep the trucks goin and the lights on at home.
Anyway, I'm still dreaming until either I can get a loan or my inheritance. I'm optimistic I can make money, I'm pessimistic about my chances on a loan.
And thanks for the info/advice. Least yall aren't coming in here in "super trucker" mode and calling me a ####### for trying.

Was just wondering...is it possible to get my own authority using a rental truck from someone like Ryder? If so, how does that work?
-
Guntoter Thanks this.

Bigbadbill allready touched on it.
Cost per mile goes up /down with the miles you run.
And those can vary enormously. -
Well, in the years to come when I can actually buy a new enough truck to drive to Cali, I might actually do it. But that's a long ways off.

A Ryder rented tractor can run as much as $600/week plus 9-12cpm. You could buy a very nice truck for that kind of money.
rollin coal, BigBadBill, bigtssa and 1 other person Thank this. -
SheepDog Thanks this.

One other note... You will be unlikely to find a truck for this price with an apu. So either plan for .5 lower mpg or the cost of buying one. Don't forget you can take it with you when you upgrade to a newer truck.
just my $0.02 -
Nothing run starting with a 20k truck, I started almost 4 weeks ago I got a 16k cash 2003 Century knock on wood no problems so far. Even do I only do the NE, start off with something and just build from there.SheepDog Thanks this. -
Our actual quarter 2 operating cost was $1.29 per mile including all expenses except pay to us. That's fuel, broker/trailer fee to the company we are leased to, and any other expenses including insurance, maintenance, repairs, IFTA, cell phone, etc. This changes a bit each month based on the fact that some expenses change each month. That's with a payment on a used truck.
SheepDog and BigBadBill Thank this.
