What would you run and why? I am looking at buying another truck and can't make up my mind. We are settled on a western star 4900SB but we need some input on the engine. What are the good and bad of both? I should really like more feed back on the DD16.
DD16 vs ISX both rated for 600hp 2050tq

No experience with neither. Only thing I can say is Detroit's seem to fare better with longevity.

Rontorino has recently bought a 4900 with a DD16. Look for him in the flatbed section.
MartindakC02 Thanks this. -
Detroits have better reliability and MPG. If I were buying a brand new truck i would but the Detroit hands down. That being said, what kind of hauls do you do that require 600 horse? If you a van driver keeping under 80k, you would be better off with a d15 for fuel economy.

I have had a 2012 4900 western star dd15/560 on the road for 2 1/2 years and just replaced my 07 4900/550 acert cat/ with a 2014 4900 dd16/600. It's only
been running 2 days so I can't tell you much yet. I chose a dd16 over the Cummins because the 2012 dd15 has been basically trouble free. I run 7-9 axle lowbeds with a lot of off highway/steep grades and we never get good fuel mileage but when running the dd15 side by side with 2 c15/550's and a c16/600, the detroit will do +10% better, pulling same weights at the same speed. Jake holds better on the detroit too. If the dd16 will come close I will be a happy camper. -
I haven't driven a DD16, but when I worked in oilfield we had quite a few Pete's with the 600/2050 ISX. Apart from frequent EGR cooler issues they were quite reliable. Of course, these trucks had more hours on the motor after 30,000 miles than an OTR truck would have in two years operation (due to running very nearly 24/7/365).

Both use improved CRD technology, Cummins calls it XPI, Mercedes calls it X-Pulse
DD16 is really Mercedes OM473 engine of EPA2012/Euro-6 emission level.
Both engine have good fuel milage, powerful and silent.
But, IMO, emission stuff is not reliable enought (EGR, VGT, DPF, DOC, DEF all in one) and too expencive to maintane. I vote for new engines if I have to work in places where old engines are banned, but in other places I'd use EPA99 ore Euro-2 engines, so IMO, glider kit with pre EGR series 60 would be good choise. -
Stay away from California. I would delete the emission junk off the engine.
