How come most truckers don't use an Aux power supply while stopping?

At today's price for fuel of $4 recouping your cost on an APU would only take about a yr to a yr and a half, if you figure you would get .5 mpg better with an APU than with out it.

    Thats not that long.

Overall, it seems to me(and I've had trucks with and without) they are worth having today. The price and to some extent the added weight has kept them near the rear of the "accessories" list for most trucks. With fuel prices going up so quickly, many companies are at least reconsidering the APU lately. Until most trucks have them though, we'll see what was explained in the 1st post. The truck I'm going back to on Monday has one and I'm looking forward to using it again, not just for fuel savings, but for less noise and more overall comfort.

The Smartway program isn't that great. Or at least it wasn't for me.

One finance company wanted over $500 just to process the loan.

One wanted all sorts of info from the vendor as if the vendor was the one filling out the credit app not me. The owner of the vendor company refused to give his personal SSN, bank account numbers, balances and other info the finance company wanted. They refused the loan.

Another one REQUIRES membership in OOIDA.

I have had APUs on my last four trucks, I wouldn't be without one. By the time you figure your cost to idle it's a no brainer. I can run the gen-set for my 10 hour break and not use more than 2 gallons of fuel. And yes I have a 120" house, with all the comforts of a real home.

By the time you figure fuel used, and the wear and tear on the life of your oil, due to the soot buildup from having to idle. If you run synthetic oil, the cost can even be higher. My synthetic has been in for the last 200,000 miles, with just adding filter change and dily usage replacement. I change the gen-set weekly, it holds 2.5 qts., with regular Rotella. Change the filter every other week.
