    good afternoon from DEEP FREEZE NYC!

    so some of you guys may know from my previous thread that i was looking for a company sponsored cdl course that will hire me after i finish, after following some advice from here i applied for prime inc and a week later they finally called me, i informed them that i would like to start orientation on the feb 1st so i can have time to tie some loose ends over here in NYC. now here comes the magic question, is this company alot better then crst? they are going to pay me 600$ a week while im in class and is a one to one training method as suppose to being a class, and is a solo operation not team, any advice given by you guys/ and gals :) are all greatly appreciated..

    I worked for Prime in the 90's. Prime's a much better company and has better equipment to boot. I'm not sure how they work their school they didn't have one at that time. Did you ask recruiting those specific questions? When I was there when a student or trainee was assigned to a trainer the truck was run as a team or if trainer wanted to take it easy for a week or two till you got comfortable with the truck then it was balls to the walls! Thats how I trained I let trainee get use to my truck and when I felt that they had a grasp of what was going on and what was expected of them then I would tell dispatch were ready for team freight. Call them and ask them point blank about the question you have.

    Better get your facts straight before you make your decision. I'm a Prime instructor and trainer.

    You will not be an employee or paid during school (called PSD program) They will make available $200 a week loan to live off of, interest free to be paid back at $25/week once you are a trainee. (Trainees are employees and get paid after PSD)
    You will attend half week of classes/orientation then one on one instruction on the road moving real freight in the real world for 3-5 weeks. Instructor will be in passenger seat and no team type situation. Your instructor will teach you how to safely operate the truck and develop the skills to pass the test . You'll come back and take the exam.

    Once you have your CDL you are automatically an employee and THEN you will be paid a minimum of $600 per week as a trainee (or .12/mile, whichever is greater). In this situation it will be training in a team like environment. Your trainer will teach you how to operate the truck in various conditions, terrains and within the policies and procedures of the company to ready you to drive in your own truck.

    So it can be 4-7 weeks (depending how quickly you get your CDL) before you start getting paid that $600.

    Awww Chuck you ruined the surprise that he would of got after that long bus ride. I wonder how those recruiters sleep at night. But it probably is still a better deal then CRST.

    Prime is a decent starter company;

    They have several types of hauling capacities ranging from OTR reefer to dedicated reefer all the way to tanker and flatbed.

    The equipment is newer and all of it is equipped with APU's

    The pay is decent for a newbie.

    In short, take your chances; it's worth it. If I had to do it all over again, I would've gone with Prime as my starter company.
