I guess your right you fishtailed because you was going do much fast than the truck when he moved over and was still fishtailing at the point you was headed to the front of his DRIVES ( as stated before and last time I checked this was the at the rear of the truck but I guess dumb truck drivers no nothing about steers and drives ) which means you was probably going better than ten MPH faster than him but YOU could not have prevented it at all by telling that you gaining on him so much faster and let out of it just a bit just incase (defensive driving Since you know the hammer lane is not taken care of ). So I guess its 1000% his fault.

Trust me I can't and don't predict all moves idiots make but I try my best to prepare for the Just incases and My driving record also shows it.
Yes He was in the wrong I agree but so was you and two wrongs don't make a right they make for out of control vehicles and wrecks Man up a take I little of the blame. you drive it a lot apparently and should be prepared for the worst as a PROFESSINAL driver.

I maintain that a sharp swerve to a lane that is covered with ice is worse than light braking in a lane that is basically clear of ice.
That is made clear by the OP's words that he lost much of his control and swerved back and forth between lanes.

I hope to never be next to him, or behind him, in any case.

Maybe you missed all the things I said in my post.. So here is a refresher... A) my lane what CLEAR and I was driving at a safe condition B) the lane I was forced into was snow and ice covered C) you can't predict EVERY vehicle on the road... If you think you can then you need to get your head check.. I don't know of any human that can predict the future can you??? How about you tell me (since your a future teller) how I would know that this guy was going to cut me off within 6 feet of my front bumper forcing me into a lane that is not clear (unlike my travel lane) that was not match with my driving speed that I would drive in that snow covered lane.. I'd really like to hear you explanation it would be fun to hear it.... Maybe I should do 30miles/hr everywhere I go incase I might run into some snow and ice. You never know when you might hit a patch in the clean roads right.. You need to get off you high horse and stop blaming the me because this guy f'ed up... I did nothing wrong lol and you got to be kidding me if you actually think I did lol.. I was doing everything right driving a respectable speed for my CLEAN lane, keep safe following distances from cars in my lane and staying in my lane until of course I got cut off.... I didn't make the mistake of merging into another lane unsafely.. If I re-ended him because he cut me of you do know that he will be charged for a improper lane change right??? Don't believe me one of our guys had something similar happen to him but on dry roads the guy who cut our driver off was charged.. Or here is another one a few years back a girl cut into a lane with her car because she needed to get into the collector lanes, well when she did, she cut off a family of 5 and they swerved to avoid her FLIPPED the car over the median barrier and killed both parents the 3 kids in the back seats luckily survived... You can go visit her in jail if you want because she was charged with vehicular manslaughter after making a stupid move... No different then what happened to me.. So if this is my fault how come in 2 similar instances of cut offs were the forward vehicles at fault and charged???

Flatbed - I know Montreal is bad but so it Toronto..... I was in control of my vehicle cause I didn't crash it, I controlled it and avoid an accident... Sure it was an out of control in control type situation because it could have went the other way too.. I used my skill (and a little luck) to get my out of a bad situation... I don't get how people think that everything in this world is perfect... You can help that some other guy drives like and idiot and put your out of control... No one drives perfect so it's impossible to be in control all the time.. You can really only control how you operate your vehicle you can't control what others around you do... So if the other guy is not in control of his car and his your then how the hell can you be in control in a situation you have on control over..... If you think you can control ever situation then you need to rethink how certain you are of yourself and you driving habits.. I would mark that mind thinking as being over confident to think you can control everything that happens around you...

A few years back I was almost side swiped on my bike by a car making a sudden change in where he wanted to be on the highway.. I was in the transfer lanes from express to collectors and this guy I guess made a last minute decision that he wanted to go to the collectors as well and cut right over 3 lanes and almost hit me... I suppose that was my wrong doing as well and I should have predicted that the guy was going to swerve over 3 lanes... I forgot I am super human and can tell the future...

No I'm not being melodramatic just stating the facts.. I am not looking for sympathy in anyway... I was more venting about what happened and most of all the lack of professionalism in the industry.. In fact I didn't even expect it to turn out how it did... Your right this kind of stuff happens all the time everyday... I have lost count on how many times I have been cut off going down a hill with weight on and backed off my speed to regain space and don't make post about it.. This one just really pissed me off because he made my loose some control of my car and all I am saying is it could have really affected me in one way or another.. You can't predict everyones move, there have been times where I can see the person looking over their shoulders or swerving to my lane and I back off assuming they may make a move.. Are you going to tell me you have never had someone just swing into your lane with no indications that they were going to make such a move.. No signal, no swerve, no head movement NOTHING at all.. ???

    Whatever.....

I'd rather take my chances and swerve into a lane with no cars and hope I hit the barriers rather then shove my car under the truck.... You realize you have only seconds to make a decision right.. Must easier to say this online but wait until something happens to you in real life and then tell me what your decision was... Everyone can jump on someone when they more then a few seconds to think about it... You right make I could have hit the brakes lightly and not hit him, but when you have on seconds to think about it you gotta make a choice and you gotta do it FAST.. Like I said I'd rather swerve into a lane with no cars in it and take my chances rather then HOPE I can stop before I hit the bumper and end up under the truck.. You can have fun under the bumper of the truck ok..

Your right I mis-read your post sorry...

Of course I was gaining on him, he is in a truck and I'm in a car... He could have slowed on on a slight incline due to weight..... He could have been limited to 90km/hr.... Either way I was doing the speed limited and on a clear traveled lane.. Are you telling me that every time you approach a car you don't pass, you know just in case they decide to move over???? Or are you telling me when your read to over take another vehicle that you drop you speed down incase they come over? What a load of BS

negative I do slow down a bit as I approach so I am still gaining but not enough to not over take them but the way you described it you was doing quite a bit faster than him you would have been gaining fast to have changed lanes fishtailed I would assume off the gas and got ahead of his drives that's what I am saying I don't avoid passing I just slow a bit if I am gaining fast and it appears to be slick anywhere near me (aka the next lane or shoulder beside me if already in the hammer lane).
I do not care if my lane and the one to the right are clear as bells When approaching a vehicle if snow and ice are involved I take no chances sorry I guess I am just full of BS
just think about it you are coming up on a truck the appears to be going that much slower had you dropped even 2-3MPH 100 ft before you got to him would that have maybe stopped this from happing? You are sure your lane is clear how sure are you that his is and he won't hit a patch of ice and slide into your lane? How positive are you that someone is not on the side of the road walking because their car ran out of gas half a mile up the road and going to spook him? OR a dog run out in front of them.
Pass them Yes but I would rather slow a bit and pass them with care especially in winter conditions.
and at that hour you ALWAYS should be prepared to run across sleepy and/or drunk drivers Just saying.

I am not saying that there is an excuses for the driver just that YOU as a PROFESSIONAL Driver could have avoided the incident from experience as you stated before they do it all the time around there you knew the roads close to you were slick (prepare for the worst hope for the best)

To say I don't is a crook just tonight I was going though Saint Louis and I was in the middle lane going about 60 in a 65 as there where off and on slick spots in left lane(who know when there will be one in mine) I came upon a car that was going way slower I would assume about 50 as I got near I let up and passed them about 53-54 since I had already been slowing if they changed lanes real fast I was close enough to matching their speed that I could have lightly braked and not ran into them. go faster than them and pass but do it safely. and since your in a car its easy to regain the speed the 15 seconds you lose by slowing down close to their speed but still gaining won't kill you but not taking the extra Might.

I am sorry If I am offending you that's not what I am aiming for just a little acknowledgement that a bit more defensive driving may have kept it from happening I am sure your a good driver as your record shows and the fact that you kept cool and recovered I have not driven the 405 but I hear its a really bad and to have made it this long without a wreck I applaud you. even the best drivers mess up from time to time they may not wreck but they look back and ask how they may have been able to avoid the possibility of wreck. There are sometimes there is nothing I just don't think this is one of them.

I do thank you for acknowledging the fact that you miss read the first post and I understand how and why you did

If you do not like NEGATIVE comments then quit posting about stupid things that happen and I was not posting about my actions ( over confident ) I was responding to yours and if you read it in the proper context you did have your vehicle under control as you avoided a mishap!.

I heard exactly the same stupid advice from a CHP officer better than 10 years ago. I'll bet the same officer/s would cite any driver following it for an "unsafe lane change", and rightly so.

There's a lot of factors at play, but perhaps first is that objects approaching "head-on" offer only an apparent change in size as a clue to their speed/rate of closure, and that rate of change is not linear, as people expect.

Second might be "inattentional blindness". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inattentional_blindness

Visual perception is nowhere near as reliable as it seems. Everyone has searched for something for 5 minutes before finding it under their nose, and pulled out in front of traffic (or nearly so). Still, they trust a glance in 1 direction to be sufficient to ensure the way is clear before they slow just enough to not carry their vehicle into opposing traffic as they fail to stop before executing those R turns on red. "Nothing happened last time, or the 1000 times before, therefore my experience has taught me I am infallible and stopping is just an unnecessary hindrance to my goal of arriving at Point B (or the red light or stop sign in full view) in the fewest possible seconds, therefore red light camera tickets must be all about revenue, because they come with a fine and I didn't crash."

People often, if not usually, if not ~always fail to realize is that they have no idea what they've missed seeing, because they missed seeing it.

People often, if not usually, if not ~always fail to realize is that they have no idea what they've missed seeing, because they missed seeing it. SO VERY TRUE and those are the ones who brag about NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENT but unaware of the ones they caused.
