We walked away from our own authority and we had the cash to do quick pay. Even with paying COD and advancing (and I hate advancing) many carriers will still not work with you. It takes time to build the business.

But the bigger problem is the carriers that will be willing to work with you as a new broker. You are rolling the dice with these guys.

Another strategy is to co-broker with an established broker. Still have to deal with the credit issues but helps getting loads covered.

The problem being most people like getting paid, and with high fuel cost you can go bust real fast with a shady broker.
No offense. But I wouldn't consider a broker with a score of less than 99.

Well, we had the score but most experienced carriers understand that the score on the load boards is bogus as is the DTP. They are getting the information from factoring companies for the most part and we worked deals with all the major factoring companies. I had no issue paying a factoring company within 10-days, even paid them when load was delivered as a way to get approved. But what is to stop me from slow paying someone that isn't factoring?

That is why we used credit sources that didn't just take ratings from factoring companies.

But agree on the non-pay. But from our side, and for many brokers, you have as many more shaddy carriers. In all of our time in the business we have less than $5k bad debt. That is less that 1/100th of a percent. But, weekly we would get calls of carriers that would pick-up loads and tell us they wouldn't deliver unless they got fuel money. AFTER ACCEPTING LOADS. And plenty that would want more money JUST BECAUSE. And yes, all of these carriers went on the national list.

You can't hold freight hostage.LOL Hope you nailed them.
The one broker I did have problems with showed me that they really didn't have too answer to anyone. Maybe I went about it the wrong way. I couldn't even find anyone that cared about me not getting paid. That was pretty much the last nail for me.Who regulates brokers?

I had a truck try to hold a load hostage once over $50 . I would have had no problem paying it but the guy was a ####### . Got with the shipper and receiver . When they told him he owned the load soon changed his tune. When he turned up for delivery he was turned away let him sit awhile.Thought better of his treats to sell the product turn reefer off ect. If you want to get extra pay their is the right way and the wrong way to try and do it.

Right way and a wrong way? You mean you want him to beg you? Or you tell him to deliver the load and you will "do what you can for him"? Or my personal favorite: "If I get detention I will pay you. I don't keep any detention money I collect."

You think he wants that hassle over $50? The "right way" for you to have dealt with him is to give him a revised rate conf for the $50 instead of playing games with him.

Fighting over $50? And how much time was wasted on this?

Also, I'm curious, how much money does a small broker take home in a week? How much is overhead compared to this profit? Now compare that to an independent trucker. Sounds like bully behavior from arrogant white collar pricks.
