It's worth repeating: Objects approaching straight-on (and verse visa) only offer an apparent change in size as a clue to their speed/rate of closure, and that change is not linear.

How about looking further ahead than the hood of your truck?

I had a similar incident, without the crash, happen up by Baltimore, I saw traffic and started slowing down, another truck goes blasting by , the has to lock the brakes to keep from hitting the cars stopped in front of him, he gets on the radio and say, "I didn't see the traffic stopping." I replied back, "Why do you think I was slowing down with my flashers on?"

I saw a sign with this at South Eastern Freight I went to pick up a load, and they had that sign right at the gate as you leave their site.

 

Didn't notice the brake lights ahead??? Too busy texting or watching that porn flick on his QuallComm!!

 

A: Because you're stupid. The first thing that pops into the head of a motorist when a vehicle slows is "What's this idiot doing?" instead of suspecting they might have a good reason to lift off the throttle. Second-guessing other vehicle operators has become a national pastime.
