Mike it took me just about 4 months to get on a flex program. It all depends on transfers in/out and retirements. I am waiting for a full time position to come up so I can bid on it. Some guys are lucky because your placed in alphabetical order for seniority. So timing and luck have a big play in it as well. At least in Sealy things move quick sometimes. Other places like where Rick is, well he has been extra for over a year now. It all depends on a lot of things so just take your time and have lots of patience.
mruffin Thanks this. -
thanks matt!! patience is one thing I have for sure learned you have to have around here LOL

Rick's wife here. When Rick got on at Buckeye, it had been 6 years since they had hired. He has 2 under him due to last name. It may be years before he is not an "extra."
It's all good though. He is happy, we see more of him than we ever did, and he is actually "home" when home. He is not stressed out, and has done more around here in a year (including on his classic car), than he had done in all 7 years at his X job.
Buckeye is one of the hardest DC's to move up in (it sounds like the ones in Florida are pretty hard too). They rarely hire, and there are always people who want to transfer in. I will say, from the outside looking in, and hearing everything that he tells me, is being an "extra" at Walmart is better than 99% of the trucking jobs out there. If he ever gets his own truck, that will just be a bonus. Oh, he could have bid on a 6/2 this last time. However, since he doesn't have his own truck, he would have to switch 2x a week. Most of the time on the 5/2, he has the same truck for the whole week, so he decided to just stay with that.
Oh, Mike, congratulations on getting through the interview. I read everything (these threads are so interesting), so I have followed everyone.mruffin Thanks this. -
ya florida is a pretty tough one too. I applied at two different dcs there couldn't even get an interview. but im proud to head to sealy if I pass the pretrip and road test. if im as nervous as I was during the interview today I may be in trouble LOL. well thank you very much!! your husband was very helpful

There is one thing I am a little concerned about, maybe you can help me on this one matt. I asked the guy that interviewed me if it all worked out and I got the job. would i be able to take off being a new guy for a couple days to go back for my daughters graduation. he said that was up to the gtm where you work out of that he couldn't answer that for sure. that could be a deal breaker for me I cant miss her graduation. its on a Friday so im sure id be scheduled.

Sealy might work things differently, but I was told by HR that if I had any plans for vacation or events etc, that they would not be a problem, they'd be more than happy to accommodate me. They even told me I could change my orientation date if it conflicted with my plans (we were having our friends wedding at our house but it was the weekend between orientation and training so that worked out better than could be hoped for. I don't think you have anything to worry about Mike, they are so accommodating and easy to work with! I needed to go home early for some urgent dental work. They got me out of there in a hurry. They actually care about you, your well being and that of your family. The work will get done, they'll always see to that, they have so many outside carriers who are more than happy to haul our freight. At Walmart, you come first.mruffin Thanks this.

thanks jim that helps ease my mind about that. I have two big things coming up, my daughters graduation is may 8th and she moves in her dorm at florida state aug 20th. I definitely want to be there for both. the dates are set in stone so I can give them months notice in advance. I was hoping that wasn't gonna be a problem.
-
Mike once you are hired on that all should not be a problem. Yes just let Paul (our GTM) know all this. You won't payee for those days until you have safety days or holidays banked. You should be able to get the time off also as long as they don't have too many ppl off on those dates. Just make sure you follow up when you start coming down here. Night all.
mruffin Thanks this.
