Do you have any other photos of this? Just want to see how far back on the truck it has to sit to clear the tandems.
Talked to the guy from Miller today & asked about the aluminum bulkhead & he agreed it obviously lightened things up.
He said the issue was that no matter how big the bolts/washers were, the plate would vibrate loose. Not falling off loose,
but rattling loose & owners were complaining with having to mess with it. Go to thicker aluminum & the weight savings
goes down while the cost increases. So that all makes sense as to why they got rid of the option.
a cost issue. -
Here is my concern on the Cottrell 5307's. Have never ran one, but if you look at the photo. You have to roll over the black flip plate to get over the tandems on the lower deck. It looks to me that it would be a automatic catch for air damns/low bumpers. As well it does not look like there is much of a spot for over the tread wheel straps. Chain yes (& know Cottrell sells this as a chain, not strap trailer), but straps are virtually required on most any car now.
Just looking for opinions or views from those who own them.Attached Files:

Those do need to be flipped up to go into the belly (#5). If you back in #6 a lowered car will be ok
LBZ Thanks this. -
Yeah, I know they flip over, just curious if anyone had any issues catching on anything.
Thinking will do another Miller anyway, but just in case... -
Drop the flip ramps and raise and lower the deck accordingly. There should never be an issue with bottoming out unless the deck is messed up (warped, bad bushings, etc). This same style rear bottom deck is commonly used on Cottrell High Sides. I've put some pretty low stuff over them, forwards and backwards.

Speedy, that's not the floating deck like on the highrails. It's more like a Boydstun, where the rear extends. Those also look like the thin jump-only flippers, they aren't like the 2 inch thick flippers you can park a car on...

Talked to someone else down there this afternoon & he said they stamp them at 19860 on the tag. Salesman this morning who said he owned 23 trucks & was a o/o stated they would weigh no more than 18,000.
Why is no answer the same twice?
Also do not understand the benefit of putting a truck down in the belly of either the 5307 or a Wally Mo. A truck is the longest vehicle(generally) that you are going to load, so would it not make more sense to put it on top
where there is 53' plus extension vs where there is what 45-47' pending neck design? The highest point of a 5307 is 102", so you burn usable height above if you are trying to stay around 13'6 or less. Miller is roughly 84" at the
highest point center flat, leaving the remaining 80" to get the trucks above.
Sure wish I went into welding & could build trailers instead of having to run them... -
Actually Speedy is right. Cassens uses that style bottom deck a lot and URS has it on their high rail company trucks. The skid deck actually slides out just like a CS-14 did and it uses manual track that you raise and lower by hand and has several positions you can put them in. Those flips that are on the trailer in the pic LBZ posted (black ones) are probably 2 sheets welded together which is the same thing they used on the 00-01 headracks that covered the pocket. I put vans and lots of other vehicles on them without any problems.

When he talked about "bad bushings," I pretty much assumed he was talking about the standard 4-link #10 deck that Cottrell uses on highrails, not the manual deck you describe. Those only have a coarse manual adjustment, don't they? Where there's only one position to place them to load the belly?
