I am looking into purchasing one of these two to test out in my fleet. I am deciding between a Coronado mid roof xt or a Peterbilt 389 with the full sleeper. Both trucks will be speced the same. Detroit series 60, 500 hp 1650 torque 13 speed 3. 58 rears (If bought from Fitzgerald) or 3.70 rears from Freightliner of Hartford. I was thinking of CAT motors, but the Detroit's are cheaper and better for fleet use. They will be pulling tanks loaded 50% of the time and the rest empty. Possibly flatbeds if they go into the fleet for that, and loads are steel, Sheetrock, lumber, building supplies, and even trash. Mainly for tank though. Will be going into Canada and over hills. I am thinking about 6.5-7 for the Freightliner and about 6-6.5 for the Pete. Any real world advice will help. Thanks
Coronado vs. 389 Glider mpg

Sound about right for sure!

I would go for Freightliner because they are cheaper than Pete.

And less expensive to buy too.brianv31, Lone Ranger 13, bwt500 and 2 others Thank this.

Buy what works best for your company, if your looking to save money but the freightliner, if your looking for longevity and timeless looks which can be upgraded go with the Peterbilt. And Pete's can get 7 mpg if speced right ad more importantly driven right. My 379 gets 6.7 most of the time and that's hitting gross. Do your math and look at the pros and cons for each truck. You should have a good understanding of what you want out of it in the end. Good luck with whatever choice you make kiddo.

The freightliner probably weighs less. Might make a difference with a tank . I think I would prefer 3.70 rears running where you are and going up to Canada. I think the pre egr Detroit does best between 1400-1600 rpm for fuel mileage, according to a graph in a pamplet I read at a Detroit shop. I have 1.1 million miles on my Pete and it is still a good dependable truck. Good luck on your choice.

We have 2 2012 Coronado Gliders with 12.7 Detroits, 13 speed, unsure of rear end ratio. They have been so good he is buying 4 more. Averaging 6.5-7 mpg doing flatbed work.
I honestly dont think it really matters if you go with Pete or Freightliner provided the spec is set up properly for what you need.
On the subject of weight,..
I was always told that Freightliner was a light truck. Well,.. I am in a Columbia right now that is considerably heavier than the 386 Pete I just got out of. Both have C15's, the main difference is the Columbia has 150 gal tanks, the Pete had 120 gal tanks. 386 hit the scales at 17640, Columbia at 19200. Definitely opened my eyes a bit.

If you take the fuel weight off that is a difference of 1150lbs. Wheel base the same?
-
How are you getting 1150 lbs from 60 gals of fuel?
Edit,..
NM, I see what you did.
Pete had a 70" sleeper, Columbia has a 72. I am not 100% sure on the wheel base.
I like the way the Pete handled better. It felt more stable going down the road. The Columbia feels loose and likes to wander,.. and it just had front end work and a full alignment.
I felt more comfortable with the steering wheel and dash configuration of the Pete vs the Columbia as well. I lowered the seat to the floor and I still feel like I am towering over the dash in the Freightliner. Steering doesnt tilt low enough for my tastes,.. nor will it telescope out in a comfortable position. Ergonomically,.. I much prefer KW or Pete,.. hands down. But for what its worth. This Columbia is an 05 with an 04 C15. No DPF or regen to contend with. The 386 was in for emissions repairs almost on a weekly basis. Had valve and jake issues as well. Other then a few minor issues that happened within the first 2 weeks,.. this Columbia has been pretty much problem free for the last 4 months now. I got in at 994300 mi, I am now at 1036780 mi.
Boss wants me to buy this truck and lease on. I was absolutely against it at first,.. I hated this truck. Well,.. I still dont like it. But its growing on me, and for $20k I dont think I could do much worse. Going to wait till summer time and see how it handles this summer,.. if all goes well I have enough cash saved to buy 2 of these. I think if I can get 1 or 2 yrs our of it,.. then I did ok for the price. Resell it if I can,.. if not,.. junk it and see what my finances will allow.

Why the 389 and not the 386? Don't have any experience with either but the 386 should get better mpg and easier vision.
