Move to the US

    Hi all

    I need some help, I am currently a Truck driver in the UK but I will be moving to Colorado in 2015. Does anyone know how I go about becoming a trucker in the US. Do I need to carryout any training?

    My wife is from the Philippines and now a US citizen and they said she has to hold a Indiana state drivers license for 1 year because she has never had a license in the US.

    She has a Philippine, Korean and a license to drive on a US base here in Korea but they say she still needs a Indiana for 1 yr.

    Other States may be different but I would check it out to be safe.

    The transmissions are non synchronized and we use flashlights, not torches.

    You can call a flashlight whatever you very well please.
    Where in Colorado are you moving to, exactly? Because there are places... a lot of them... where the job market isn't so hot. Colorado Springs, for example.
    May I ask what motivates your decision to relocate? If it's for the trucking industry, I might have to question that decision.
    Anyhow, you have to hold a regular driver's license for at least one year (your EU EC won't be counted for anything here, sorry to tell you), and you also have to be eligible to work here... I don't know the circumstances by which you're coming here, but employment eligibility... you need to have that base covered.
    What are you looking to drive? Tractor-trailers, rigids/straight trucks, mobile machinery, or....? And what sort of work are you looking for? Over-the-road, local, pickup & delivery, or....?

    If you drive a Volvo FH over there, you'll feel at home in a Volvo VN over here as they use the same interior hardware.

    My Partner is American and we have decided to move so he can be close to his family. I think we are moving to Monument, I am willing to drive anything and anywhere long Distance is no problem.

    OUCH! Monument is just north of Colorado Springs... I'm working in Denver now, partly because we're in the process of moving to this area, but that was also motivated by the lack of jobs in Colorado Springs. I actually just met someone from this forum a couple days ago to give him my notes and everything from my initial job search when I moved to Co. Springs in 2010. I've managed to stay employed in the three years and changed I've lived in Co. Springs, but it hasn't been easy, and I also had years of experience with not just driving a truck, but with operating equipment, as well.
    There are some entry-level carriers (like I said, unfortunately, your experience with your EC won't be counted here) with terminals in Denver. Swift has one, Werner Enterprises has one, I think C.R. England does, Stevens Transport hires in this area but doesn't actually have terminals...
    Couple questions...
    How much do you know about the trucking industry here? How long were you out on the road in the UK and Europe, and what are your expectations of such here?

    I must say I have only been Trucking for a short while, so my experience is limited! I am also a qualified driving instructor in the uk. I'm just checking all my options at the moment. But I really like being on the road.

    Well, if you like spending time on the road, that can be accommodated here. n which case, you'd probably be running out of Denver... if you were looking for local work in Monument, that's where you'd run into problems.
    I'm not saying you don't have experience... problem is, what you did with an EC, they're not going to take into consideration here. Different industry, different regulations, etc. There were a couple companies which counted my time driving in South Africa, but that was their discretion (and that of their insurance companies) whether or not to do so, and also owed in no small part to my having been driving with a CDL in the US previously.
