I was involved with testing synthetic oil in the early 90's when the N14 first came out, it was run by the oil supplier, we did the oil filter changes at regular intervals and the test run lasted for a little less than 600,00 miles these units ran 22 hours a day pulling chips at 144,000 lbs over two mountains in BC. 6 trucks were involved, 6 were not and ran dyno oil either shell or Delo 400. There was absolutly no increase in fuel milage, and the bearings showed a lot more wear than the dyno oil did, we did the bearings at 200,000 miles and then 300,000. These customers kept immaculate records, the synthetic engines were very dirty jelly filled slim, we were in them often as the N14 had a lot of injector problems.
I use Synthetic oil in my gas units, and diesel equipment.
I change oil early in everything, an oil change is the cheapest overhaul you will not need.
If the engine runs cold synthetic oils can break down, also when the engine starts using oil then that is the 1/2 life of the oil.
Adding special filtration, that costs money and buying fancy oils that cost a lot more makes no sense unless you are in the special circumstances were synthetics are needed to start or what ever. If $100 to $200 dollars makes a big difference in a truck that runs 20,000 to 50,000 miles you are in the wrong business.

Just changed my Mobil One 5W40 Synthetic motor oil with 145,539 miles on it and no OPS on my truck. Changed filters every 20,000 miles with an oil analysis done.

Dice1, ever thought about getting a oil cleaner. Maybe extra clean oil.

It is true that the synthetic oil itself will not break down, however the additive packages that were originally in the oil will decline in efficiency over time and use. A good additive, like Tribodyn will help with this.
-
I think just with changing the filters and adding more synthetic oil to top off will refresh the additives allowing for longer runs between draining. I have also been told by other drivers that are running the OPS I have say every forth gallon of oil added replace with Lucas. I have no facts to back up this last statement.

Why do I need an OPS?
Also synthetic oil does not need an additive to make it better. It is already way better than conventional oil.tirednaz Thanks this. -
I worked with the Shell engineer for 10 days every second day for a month he explained to me that the standard oil filter removes contaminates to about 40 micron in the first pass, and 30 after a few passes. The parts that wear the rings is the very fine pieces, below 10 micron. He was a big supporter of the spinner filters.
The only way to get out the very fine particles is to drain it. He was the one that told me that ATF is the best engine flush made, and any unit that does not have a magnetic plug you should get one or modify the one you have to take a magnet.
Using blended synthetic to me is an expensive alternative, you do not know the percentage of synthetic.
I have a Duramax LMM the last change I added the shell 15/40 then realised I did not have anouther pail, I had Valvoline 5/40 synthetic so I topped it up with that about 50/50.
I drilled my oil pan plug and added a pencil magnet, it sticks out about 1/2 inch. never had anything on it.
I worked on engines, and have seen guys extend the life of their oil and there engines wore out early, the ones that changed it early got a lot longer life. That is real world experience.
I was involved with the use of Nal-cool when it first came out, everyone used DCA4 up to that time, the 3406B was the engine of choice. he came in after being at a conference and wanted his new truck, drained and flushed with restore and Nal-cool and antifreeze added. I thought he was crazy. At that time we did Cats at about 500,000 miles for blown head gaskets, and liners sinking 3,4,5,&6. We had many Cats apart I had one right beside the unit, when I pulled his kits out the liners were like new and the ones with the DCA4 were like swiss cheese. The block was not corroded in the Nal-cool unit, it convinced me.
The standard order for a head gasket included the Water pump cover, because it was corroded away. the one with the Nal-cool was like new.
I bought a bottle and added it to my gas units, the wife has a 93 Caprice, original rad.

Detroit says you can go 50k between changes on the DD15.

Every oil degrade over time. I wonder how you didn't noticed that in your oil analysis. Either you are lucky man or your engine is built good.
