Team driver for a company. Just recently got out of a really bad 2012 freightliner having regen/def issues breaking down a lot and into a 2013 international with a Maxxforce engine. I've read about the problems but right now it's running. Wheels are moving and that means paychecks. I'm sure it will break down eventually.

te company has it set up to only allow idling when it's below or above certain temps. Well we have definitely been at the lower end. But the truck freaks out sometimes when we idle. It will rev up to about 1500 RPMs and hold it there for awhile. I'm thinking regen, right? But when it's done the RPMs drop, truck sputters like it's drowning, and would stall if I didn't give it throttle. Then it smokes. I couldn't see where the smoke was coming from cuz it wasn't that dark, but it stunk. I thought it was from the exhaust pipe. But we had the hood open once and we could see the smoke come from engine compartment. This is a company truck and as long as it keeps moving the company doesn't really care too much. I'm just wondering if I should be watching out for a disaster...

Thanks ked to anyone who can provide info!!

Sounds normal to me.... Always see those Prostars blowing white smoke going down the road after leaving the truck stop in the morning

Normal ....also it won't rev so high if you keep the heat off ...think it is tied into the water tempBut the more you drive it ...the less it will smoke when idling It burns off when you drive down the road. , mine does it after about 6-8 hrs driving

We are a team so it rolls quite a bit. Something I neglected to mention is when it's done regening, less than 5 min later it does it again. And once it starts on this cycle, it will not stop until we drive. I never notice a regen while driving. And the only time we idle is when we are waiting on a load over night and it's so cold our bunk heater just won't keep up. So we need the heat on. We dealt with the cold one night cuz I was afraid of carbon monoxide poisoning it was happening that often...

I've got a 2012 with a Maxforce motor. During idle time, mine will rev itself on occasions, just to keep the water temp at 170. When the water temp gets to 170, it reduces itself to a normal idle. Mine also will blow some white smoke when leaving the truck stop. But not much.

I only notice the smoke when it's doing the idle regen.i understand it has to do this sometimes. It just bothers me that if we have to spend the night waiting for our delivery point to open and it 5 degrees outside, the truck will rev up, hold, release, smoke us out like a bug bomb, then stall. If I throttle when it wants to stall it will stay running, only to rev up 3-5 mind later. And it will do this over and over for hours. HOURS!!

The truck will never a do regen when parked unless you push the parked regen switch and it is asking for one by the status lights on the dash. During a parked regen you will have the DPF status light on, and once everything is hot the high exhaust temp warning light will also be on. Instructions and warning light descriptions are on the back of the sun visor. The engines are programmed to cycle up to 1500 rpm to keep the coolant warm. Maxxforce engines need a lot of coolant capacity because they are an EGR engine with big EGR coolers. Because of this extra cooling capacity the engines cool down fast. This is why they rev up to 1500. The engine definitely should not be stalling when coming down to idle. If it is you have a problem for sure that should be looked at. They are also finding that the engines are reving up too fast and causing a pressure imbalance between the turbos and intake that is allowing the turbos to bypass engine oil into the intake. This may explain the smoke. There are calibration updates to address this.

Regen is pain in the butt. I have stranded in service plaza for 1 hour waiting for the truck to complete its regen process. It was non-def engine 2012 prostar.

Yep. Mines nondef also. We haven't been told by the truck to do a manual regen yet. I just can't understand why it's doing it automatically over and over. If we let it, it would do the same process for at least 8 hours straight. I also don't understand why it wants to die each time the regen is over. Weird. I guess as long as that is a normal process- I can't b*%#h.
