Has anyone purchased & imported a truck from Canada? Just been offered a couple of trucks at a real good price but the red tape to get them in the US might be hell?

Getting them in shouldn't be a problem, it's getting them registered in the states that will be your problem.

Would that be because the mileage/speed gauge are in kilometers and because of the emissions ?Last edited: Jan 23, 2014

emissions requirements are the same as most of the CANADIAN class 8 trucks were assembled in the USA or Mexico
Sleepy68 Thanks this. -
2290 issues might be a problem.

If you're buying from a dealer, they can take care of everything you need to get it over the border.
If it's a private sale, there are companies that deal with importing equipment into the US and will take care of everything for a fee.
I wouldn't try to do it on my own unless you like dealing with govment folks. Call some truck dealers around the area that you're buying the truck in and they should recommend someone.
As far as registering it in your state, there will be some extra taxes and fees above and beyond those of a domestic truck as well as paying for a new speedometer. The Canadian dollar is equal to or even better than the USD, so you won't save any money buying up there and importing like I did when it was around $1.00 USD to about $1.50 CND or so. Get all your numbers, fees and taxes figured and then you will see if it's a great deal.Studebaker Hawk and Sleepy68 Thank this. -
Thanks for the input guys. I'm making some inquiries and I'll let you know how it goes. These are a couple of heavy spec W/Stars day cabs and the prices are way better than equivalent US trucks even with todays currency conversions.

Importing the truck is easy, you can transfer the title in all 50 states, you have to pay for the 2290 as mentioned but also the FET if the truck has never been registered in the US.

I too am looking to import an '87 FLC120. DOT said besides the HS-7 form, I also need a letter from the manufacturer confirming the truck meets US regs. EPA advised the truck has to have an emissions sticker on the engine(which it does). I'm not sure how I'm getting a letter from the manufacturer.
