My normal trucks been in the shop so I've been in a 99 Mack with a Maxitorque 5spd this week (mixer truck) and I gotta say, I'm LOVING IT! Wish they could put this tranny in my truck. The 5 reverse gears are awesome out on jobsites. Anyone else drive one of these old beasts? What do you think?

Ran one in an RD688 before. Where it really shined... well, two places I can think of. Downtown Raleigh, lots of stop-and-go-traffic, really good for that. The other was the stretch of I540 going from US64 to US1, and we were at a point where we had to back up over two miles. I think it's great for vocational trucks in relatively flat areas.

I have never driven on but my buddy used to drive one of the old twin sticks and where he could shift all the gears in reverse. He said it was great when he had to back down levees and down other long roads. He said you could do 35+ plus mph in reverse.

Oh yeah, at least. Maybe 40. This one only has one stick with a selector for reverse, neutral, low and direct.

The company I do side work for (snow removal on state highways) has a bunch of Macks with max tourque 5 speeds. I wouldn't waste the gas to burn the #### things. I worked for the airport here for 21 years, lots of snow removal in a 1979 Mack, it had the twin stick-5 speed shifter with high, low and reverse on a separate shifter. That tranny was ok.
