At 19 I bought a pickup with a manual trans., my dad taught me to float the gears on it, yeah it takes talent. When I went to driving school, I started floating gears while doing the road training portion. After the third float, the instructor made me stop the truck, told me if I floated them again he would immediately flunk me. Then proceeded to ask who taught me how to float gears.

When I did a road test for western the idiot issuing the test had me go through tight little suburbia with a 48ft flatbed then had the other two do a simple on and off the highway and failed me for some minor stuff. What really passed me off was the fact I had to drive the hard route and the others got the cake walk. Another one was I applied for a dump truck job and did a ride along with a woman who said that I didn't pay attention to what she was showing me. Yet the next day the owner sent me out with his mechanic and found out that I had no problems driving a dump. Although I did miss the part where I didn't notice the old pete had the last two gears reversed but otherwise no problems...

Yea I was wondering if anyone would catch that, The examiner grabbed the hand brake, which if anything made matters worse by locking up the tires on a falling trailer...

and these are the guys that are testing us out there, maybe the link should be tell us a story about how stupid the state examiner was!!

I gave "student trips/road tests" to about 40 applicants during the years I hauled molten aluminum. I warned one applicant to approach a certain traffic light cautiously because we were going downgrade, loaded heavy, and the signal had a short yellow. He ran the red light anyway. Fortunately, traffic waiting for a green signal on their side saw us coming through. My assignment was to report but not to pass or fail, leaving the decision to the boss. Several weeks later, the applicant approached me at the fuel stop and asked why he was not hired.

While driving for a beer distributor, I gave a road test to a young, Black woman. We used a day-cab and a 53' van. When making a left turn at an intersection, she was about to take the front fender off a car stopped for the stop sign. I saw this accident about to happen by looking out the back window, and hollered at her. Her excuse was that the other vehicle had rolled forward. I reported this near miss to my boss and he failed her. Weeks later, a senior driver said the woman came back for another test and he passed her. He was joking with me.

We had a widowed friend who lost her job at the convenience store. She always wanted to drive truck, so the state unemployment office paid part of her tuition while her chiropractor paid the balance to the driver training at Lawton, MI. She failed the backing maneuvers several times, and the school was allowing her to practice on her own time. The unemployment office arranged for her to take the CDL test at the school in New Buffalo. She failed there also. She returned to Lawton and passed. She started running with a trainer at Swift, but after two weeks they sent her home. She landed a job as co-driver with a Panther expedited owner-operator on a condo box truck. She was dyslexic and had trouble reading signs at highway speeds. She wrecked in Milwaukee. After recuperating while the truck was repaired, she met her employer in Milwaukee to collect $200 back pay. He refused to pay her. A few months later, she died in her sleep at home. She was only 52. The chiropractor paid for the funeral.

I told the lady at the dmv all the answers were wrong!

Last year i was changing my address on my license and was told i had to renew the written portion of my hazmat endoressment. (Which i had forgotten had to be done every 2 years) Since i pull hazmat almost daily i went over and did it. The question came up on how hm needs to be described on the bol, (Un#-Name-Class-Packing group) which had been changed as of 1-1-13. The test still had the old way on it with the other choices being completely wrong. I told her the way had changed and all the answers were wrong. Her answers, use the old way. The look on the face of this kid taking his regular dl test when i told her they were all wrong was priceless. Passed the test no problem to the amazement of the lady in the license line. She couldnt believe i didnt study at all for it. Told her i pull hazmat all the time and its a common sense test.

I wasn't present when this happened but students at my CDL school saw the program administrator climb into a tractor / trailer to move it to where the other trucks were parked when he cut the corner too sharp in 5th gear only to take off the hood of his own 4 wheeler.

needless to say the next class had one less trailer for practice.

Let's see first time I took my backing, I ran out of time with my front steer tire a half inch over the line

first time I took the road test, I forgot to split down at a stop light making a right hand turn and auto failed with my nose in traffic

second time I took the road test, I stopped to far over a line coming off a side road, with no one behind me, and pissed the examiner off by inching backwards just enough that cars on the other street wouldn't be impeded...he was pissed because it was a stupid move, but he couldn't failed me for it either, got back and he told the other examiners and they all laughed
