I have a friend who has a Cobra 29 cb radio that he bought at auction and is willing to give it to me at no cost. It works but is missing antenna, mic. and all the wiring. My questions are is this a good radio and would it be worth the trouble of buying new wires, antenna, and mic. Or would I be better off buying a new one.

Cobra 29 is one of the most common radios around. Most cb shops will test them for cheap. If it checks out, it would be worth buying the other stuff, you'll need it anyway. I buy most of my accessories off the net, mostly ebay.

Tricky Rick, As a "Noob" can you offer any insight on any particular antenna and parts for this thing or are most of the components all the same? Thanks!

First off, yes this is a good radio. You mentioned it has nightwatch...be advised they're known to burn out and when they do, they're expensive to fix....but the radio will still work, just you won't have the backlighting for night time driving.

For an antenna, get yourself a Wilson 2000 trucker. Also get some RG8X coax to run between the radio and the antenna. Use only as much coax as you need to do the job.

For a mic, a Road King 56 is good, the Astatic 636 is also good though the Astatics are tinny sounding. However if you can get the old school coffin style mics, they're also pretty good.

The power plug....the one for a Cobra 29 also fits most Connex, Galaxy and a host of other radios.

All of this can be found at a truck stop if you don't mind overpaying for it. eBay is another place you can find all of this

Get a Astatic mic. Have tried them all and they are the best. Antenna depends on what you are going to put it on. Condo, mid, flattop??? Wilson 2000 is a good one. Most will do alright but you have to have it set correctly. A $100 antenna that is not tuned properly is just junk. Online is best place to buy. Bought my last Astatic for $24. Every shop in DFW area wanted min of $45.

My main cb setup is very simple. Cobra 29 Classic LTD NightWatch, stock Cobra microphone, 18' clear coax with the copper wire inside, vise grip antenna mount on the airline slide bar on 2011 daycab Cascadia. Francis fiberglass 5.5 antenna. There are thousands of better setups. This one is affordable, gets out 4-6 miles most of the time, dependable (replaced the SWR meter light once in 20 years) and most thieves won't break in the truck to steal it. My backup setup is identical, except the antenna is white, instead of orange. I have tried both RK 56 and Astatic mikes with no real measurable gains. My NightWatch is still working on both radios. I don't drop them much. I have heard that the Francis is pre tuned to a 29 with 18' coax. I know my SWR is really low, so that may be true. Almost forgot, I run an external speaker Radio Shack and Cobra on my rigs.

Take a test light and find out which wire is hot before you hook it up. Green may be the ground, but I'm not sure. DON'T hook it up backwards as it will cost you some money.
