I bumped into Elvis at the mall today and he said that Jimmy Hoffa told him that TMC was going out of business. is this true?

Chief, I gotta say that was the best laugh I have had in a while! Thanks for all the personal insight from notarps, terry and eckz. I think I have decided on TMC. It may have been fate but yesterday I got on the interstate to test out some new wheels I had replaced on my car and lo and behold a shiny TMC rig passed me. That thing looked super sweet ridding down the highway and the guy driving looked pretty happy too. So I will be going to Columbia SC either 3/31 or 4/7 for orientation. Wish me luck, I'm sure I will need it.

Now, my only choice is to go with the percentage pay or by the mile. Any comments?

of course the guy looked happy - it was the ghost of Jimmy Hoffa! dead people are always happy! I might see you there. I've been prehired by them.

Good luck, but then I am a firm believer in that you make your own luck. If you want it bad enough go get it.

As far as percentage vs. mileage my advice is to watch what the economy is doing seven weeks after you start training. You won't have to decide until then. You will be able to figure out percentage pay and mileage pay for the loads your trainer get with you in the truck. Chose which ever works out best for you. My take is that freight is show some signs of picking up and I would go with percentage.

Designors, that don't make much sense to me since they are still recruiting new hires. I am scheduled to go to orientation on the 7th of April in Columbia SC. Am I missing something??

ECKZ, have you heard anything bout this? have you been ordered back to the yard on 4/18 ?

Dont know what to say .... that is what a couple drivers were saying about it all

I think it is a bunch of BS truthfully .... the only way to know is when there are no more trucks on the road

Stuge & all - Think of it this way. If TMC is shutting down in late April, as those two drivers said their trucks had to be in the yard by the 18th, it still makes sense that they're holding orientations for new drivers. Come again? It's simple. No company that ever shuts down REALLY gives their workers a lot of notice, unless they are unionized and they MUST DO IT. Some of the staff knows the inside scoop. Other staff does not. The company bigshots position themselves vis-a-vis the company's accounts receivables and payables. They're going over the fine print with their lawyers, making sure they can walk away on two feet. As for the poor schmuks in orientation, they'll be sitting around waiting for a trainer, then they'll be sent home, then they'll be waiting for their checks "in the mail" for the minimalist orientation pay they were promised. Those two drivers were trying to get the word out. But most people want to believe everybody only speaks negatively because they are lying. Ever hear of the term "whistleblowers"? Blow your horn! The U.S. economy is tanking, and it's not only the O/Os who are finding themselves in the red. Some of the large carriers won't make it either.

cabhappy, I do see your point of the company not telling anybody what is about to happen if they are fixing to close, but why would they spend the money for 2 weeks of orientation (4/7 - 4/18) hotel, lunch, orientation pay (its not much but it is money out of their pocket) to just say the Friday that orientation is over "sorry, we are closed, go home." ? I am completely new to trucking, but I would think they would just not have orientation if they were going to close down.
