12.7 Detroit Operating Temp?

    My 97 Freightliner FLD120 has a 430/470 detroit 12.7 but noticing it is running only 170-175 in warm weather, 160-165 in cold weather. I flushed the cooling system put all new hoses on the other day so i changed the thermostats and seals while it was drained and put new coolant in. Checked the fan hub so i know thats not the problem. I used the kent moore seal installer and put 190 degree stats in. Anyone ever run across a worn/ pitted housing causing a problem like this? What am i missing...

    Dude, it's winter. Put a winter front on your grill. That cooling system is designed to keep your engine from over heating on a 100 degree day, pulling a hundred thousand pounds up s mountain. The side effect is that when it's winter you have to limit how much frigid air is being sucked through that radiator in order to get your temp up.

    your in good territory i.m.o. the winter temp you have is not going to hurt anything. your heat, defrost should still be hot. in the summer, that is a perfect temp. I see many trucks on the top of hard steep grades on the shoulder with their hoods open cause of over heating. I run 190 thermo's in the winter & in the summer run 180. if not my engine will run hotter than I want it too for my taste. if I had your temp in summer & winter, I would leave it as it is.

    really relativelly wide range of temperature is good for diesel engine, from 70dgr c to 103 dgr C. over 103 - is overheating
