I've been studying nutrition for over 20 yrs as I was a fat kid and needed to take action. The main secret to losing and maintaining weight. Cut the carbs down to almost zero. It's just that simple but believe me it's not easy to do this. Therefore no potatoes, bread, rice, pasta, sweets, soda, etc etc
carbs are the main cause of obesity. Look at the obesity and diabetes epidemics. Sugar/ carbs is slowly killing many of us and things aren't getting any better. You can't expect the Govt to come up with any sensible solutions and the way big business is in the country. They con and brainwash you into believing that fat is the culprit which is BS.
the drug companies want you to find the solution with a plethora of drugs such as Zocor and Lipitor. Drugs aren't the answer. But people want a quick fix and an easy way out. There isn't one.
My input is to do your own research on nutrition, don't believe your doctor about anything to do with this topic.
By and large he has no clue either. I fired mine a few years ago when He tried to get me on a Cholesterol drug.
    No thanks.
Obesity and diabetes can be defeated as long as you're motivated and have the desire to lose weight. Being overweight as you get older and you will pay the price with ill health. To lose weight is a long term project and a drastic change of lifestyle.
    Good luck

Do you know how hard that is? Ok bread no big deal but to cut off all carbs is virtually impossible unless you want to eat only cold cut meat with a piece of lettuce everyday.

    There's these things called... vegetables.
My son is 5'11" and weighed almost 300 lbs.
He got disgusted and did some research...FOR HIM...he eliminated animal products. meat, eggs, milk, cheese, in other words, a vegetarian. Said he hadn't planned it that way. He also exercised (ran on treadmill everyday), took about a year to loose 100 lbs. Said he never felt better. But he cautioned me that it might work differently for other body types.
I do better with a small amount of meat, occasional egg and tons of veggies. Very light on soy products. A little milk on my coffee, almond milk for oatmeal.
Light on the sugar. The doc prescribed Lipator, said my chlorestral was a little high. Danged stuff causes diabetes in women. Ok for men only if necessary.
Lost weight while on the truck. Two meals a day, like a subway and a fruit cup. Maybe every 2 or 3 days a sitdown, preferably at a TA.
And lots and lots of water. Soda maybe once a month. Occasional gatoraide. Bring my own tea.
Easier to lose weight at home than on the road.
and one cup of coffee. Bringing tea from home is cheaper.
More than one way to lose weight, but learning to eat SMALL portions is a good start.
Adding steamed and raw vegetables helps. An apple a day is fiber. Less salt and sugar are the only 2 things where I can honestly say less is more. Easy on the fats, do not try to eliminate fat.
No sweat if you dont follow a strict diet. It takes a while to try new things and be comfortable.
    Take care and good luck.

thank you all for your input. To 74pete359, owning my own truck would be like running my business, Leather and cedar Dynamics. 14 hour work days and then another few hours of paper work. Then just when you think you got it all licked a belt breaks on a saw that can only be ordered from Japan. Don't want to leave one headache for another. As to losing weight... A few years ago I lost 73 lbs in 3 months on the low carb atkins diet. Yes it works but after awhile when you go back to eating like a normal human it all comes back.

Ha Ha Driver2Broker I sure do my friend. I tell people all the time how hard it is, and you're talking to a guy who absolutely loves crusty bread, but I've cut them out to virtually nothing. It took me awhile and I got terrible withdrawal so that's what sugar has on us. But it's amazing how fitter I feel. I could do with cutting down on cheese a tad. I eat a ton of fresh fruit. And I buy a bag of avocados from Costco and eat one chopped up with vinaigrette and Parmesan cheese. A really good snack. And the only thing I drink is Perrier water, the fizzy stuff. Not everyone's cup of tea but I love it.

Hope you don't mind, but I think you're doing fine with what you eat, but I take issue with cholesterol and Lipitor. I fired my doc last year because he insisted I go on that stuff. Contrary to the mainstream, cholesterol causing heart disease is a myth, a big lie. But the drug cos have conned us into believing this nonsense. Remember that these drugs are a $6 billion cash cow to the greedy drug cos. I've done some serious research on this topic. There's no evidence that cholesterol causes heart disease, none, zilch. There's stronger evidence that heart disease Is caused by inflammation, and which food group causes this....carbohydrates. As I've said many times, we eat waaaay to much carbs. I refuse to take any of these dangerous drugs, and FYI the vast majority of cholesterol is produced by your own body, in the liver. Let nature and your body processes take care of what is natural. And you're right about fat. We need it for body functions. Good luck.

Actually, I be inclined to agree with you, but I suppose there may be a few people that need them.
Best diet I ever heard of. One of the nuns at church was way overweight. The doctor told her... If God made a food for us to eat, do so. If men "improved" , do not eat it. It worked. Simplest diet ever.
You do have to think about what you're eating.
Example, butter is churned to pull all the tiny butterfat globules together, no problem. The husk is cleaned off wheat because it's inedible for humans. Ok., good. Ground for flour, ok. But when we bleach flour to make it pretty, and add chemicals, aftificial flavors, etc, no good. Because many preservatives are added due to the huge amount of food needed in the US daily, we pretty much dont think about our body chemistry and the "food" we eat. We really need to. Most of the carbs we eat are "improved" by man.
    Y'all take care.

I agree with Krashdragon. One thing to note is how everyone emphasizes the hunter when talking about our "hunter/gatherer" past. The reality is that the emphasis was on gatherer for food sources. Most indigenous diets are bulked out with foraged plant food heavy on fiber rather than meat. Even Innuit, who are held up as a prime example of almost a 100% meat diet, binge on foraged plant food from the tundra during the spring and summer to overcome wintertime vitamin and mineral deficiencies. So, in your example the emphasis would be on the lettuce rather than the cold cut meat.

Reducing carbohydrates is key to weight reduction. The volume of what you eat should be fresh vegetables, with most of that in the form of raw vegetables rather than cooked vegetables. Eating raw vegetables will "fill you up" better than cooked vegetables and retain far more vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Carbs in the form of fresh fruit is the best way to give you the energy you need.
