Hi all, I'm looking for opinions. I'm going to put together a Body job, will be a water truck. Looking to go the glider route I really need some info.
    What would you do...
12.7 or 14L is there a big difference? other then power, Im talking reliability
    What about an N14?
This is in Canada, I should keep it pre 06?

Any information will help. The cost is not what Im worried about, just reliability.

I phoned a dealership in Prince George and they said you can. Can't import though, that would be just to #### nice.

I used to operate both N14 (on DAF95 and ERF) and 12.7 on Freightliner and now I can surelly say that both pre EGR engines are good, but Series 60 offers better fuel milage, but not so reliable as N14. Series 60 is like a greese box, leaks oil. Sometimes we had to change geartrain bearings.

N14 is more reliable mechanically, but not so good for fuel economy.

Good engines are M11 and ISM, but top power is 400 hp.

Get a cat. I am not saying a big power cat, but a 475 with 1850 torque will be good. With this type of motor, try finding a 2ws cat. It will run forever, get good fuel economy(if you care about that) and you will still have a motor that will pull.

I know. 2ws stopped at about 1999. They are a heck of a motor

I consider Detroit 12.7 for Midwest linehaul. Coronado or Columbia.

I am pretty happy with my Series 60 DDEC IV 12.7 in my glider. It does everything I ask of it quite well. At 218,000 on that factory remanned engine, still doesn't leak a bit, doesn't use more than a half quart of oil in 15,000 miles, and I have gotten some of the best used oil sample results from it that I have ever seen. I can pull right along with the C-15's, DD15's, ISX's all day long. Only the ones that have been tweaked up on power over stock really can walk away from me. I have my 12.7 tweaked a little, so it is not totally stock settings or components.

I have a soft spot for the N-14 also. That would be a great choice also. Either way, I have taken both Detroits and N-14's beyond 1 million without opening them up for a major repair or inframe. One could always end up not that lucky. There are no guarantees in life.
