FM was calling all drivers today to be sure they are visually checking the fifth wheel locking pin as there have been more disconnects. Driver gets fired every time. Always use my flashlight to check it before lifting the landing gear. Guess if its not a habit it might just be a matter of time... Launching after the snow on Thursday.

They tried to get me out tonight also. Midnight pickup, 7am delivery. Declined. Not used to all night driving, then I'd get stuck on a "nights" routine for the week. Was also looking forward to a peaceful last night at home for few weeks. 30 mins after declining that load, got planned for a Tomah to Neenah run, then picking up a student. Much better.

Funny you say that. I hooked up an mt that was left for me today, and when I checked the locking pin it looked like there was a lighter colored part on the right side of the pin I haven't seen before. Obviously I didn't care for that, so unhooked and re-hooked, same thing. Did like 5 tug tests and all good. I don't launch until morning, but may unhook and re-hook one more time to be sure. Not sure if the pin is sticky from the cold or if I'm just being paranoid.

Hm, that "lighter colored part on the right side of the pin" could very well be the portion of the sliding bar that normally slides down into the pocket on the right side of the 5th wheel jaw. You're right to be paranoid; I would check it and/or call maintenance for advice.

Yea I'm going to play with it again in the morning before I head out. I didn't hear the click I like to hear either when I bumped the trailer. Right away felt like something was off. If I don't get it how I want it I won't be going anywhere.technoroom Thanks this.
