I have the General HP40W kind of the big brother of the Gen Lee. I have been very happy with it. As far as the conversion goes all they do is cut out 4 resistors on the solder side of the board and there ya go...

been a while since I had a Lee, but I think D is 11 meter usually...If not try E....and you will want to stay on AM...not many in the U.S. use FM, that's more of a UK thing.

The radio is use everyday is a Cobra 29 nightstand, audio and rd finals, limiter diodes, and choke coils have been replaced to ensure loud and most important clean.

The loudest strongest radio in have is a Galaxy 95t, the antenna setup for it is a Stryker with rg142u Teflon coax. I do not run it in the truck anymore not do I tried recommend spending that much on a radio. Theft issues and also runs very hot.

I think the Cobra is a much better buy for the money, just add a good Mic and a good speaker and your good for years of service.

For the cb bands it is on D and on AM. If anything you can have a cb shop do the conversion and peak and tune shouldn't run you more than $40

I think the Lee is the radio to buy for a trucker....if you use the channels outside the legal CB band. If not, Cobra 29 or the Uniden equivalent is the way I would go. They are built better than the export radios and hold up better. I run a Connex 3300 HP in the truck, Mirage 9900 w/linear in the pick-up, have a Galaxy 88 on the shelf for a spare, as well as a very modified Cobra 25 w/lower channel kit....Had a connex board in it but took it out and gave to a friend that really wanted it. I use echo in the export radios, but just a little bit....most people run too much in my opinion. Funny I recommend the 29 but don't own one....but I've had several of them and they are one of my favorites. I use the lower channels at work, thus the reason I run a export radio. And no, I never even get close to the Ham band!

A few years ago cobra switched boards from the one that made their name to a cheap china board. they have been c rap ever since! But a lot of the 10 meter radios have also so. but I will tell you that cobra originally sourced their boards from uniden. YMMV

The board that made Cobras a good name was the Uniden board. They've not been with Uniden since about the mid 1990's.

OP, best thing to do is take your Lee, turn it to 19, put it on the D band, then have a buddy with a "legal" CB (Cobra 29, 25, etc) that's not been messed with in terms of adding channels....and have him give you a radio check, to ensure you're on the CB band. Then NEVER touch the band knob.

Or....buy a frequency counter and plug it in the rear of the radio.....and keep it between 26.965 to 27.405.....that's the frequencies for channel 1, and 40.

Also might want to do some reviewing on Big Mouth's.....quite a few customer issues there as I recall.....
