Some unloads take hours live with it, of course you have to climb on the tank in winter. I have been climbing all over mine this brutal winter and some how I'm still alive. It isn't Everest exactly. If those reasons are why you gave up a better division with higher pay then stay away honestly. I hear from somebody every month who would love to go bulk but there is always some ridiculous reason they cant. Had one guy the other day tell me he was worried about the super singles in winter???
If you want drop and hook then stay away as we do very little. Are you going to work more, you bet. Sorry but your reasons are strange and usually those come from somebody who just wants to slam doors. Which is fine, just don't expect the same benefits.

Let me tell you what I have found.

Will you make more money driving a chemical tanker than a dry van? Yes. Will you make $60 - $65 K like a certain driver is always telling people? Not likely. I'm sure there are a few of those jobs out there but they don't grow on trees.

If you don't like heights, especially in bad weather, than this job isn't for you. There is nothing wrong with that. If you get enough years behind you to earn top cpm and you drive for the right account, you can earn just as much driving a dry van as pulling a tanker.

I, personally, prefer tanker work but having my hazmat and 5 years of experience hasn't been any sort of holy grail for me as far as income goes. You do what you feel is best for you.

Don't be surprised when they say they will not let you switch. Once you sign up for a position they expect for you to work for 6 months before you explore different opportunities within the company.

I will say that we do a lot of work for free in intermodal. Chassis flips, making repairs to improperly maintained chassis etc. I don't know the pay scale for where you are but the guys in Charlotte running regional make more than I make as a local driver.

I asked to switch to the IC side and was shot down. Had to go through my manager, the ops manager, and finally the division manager before I was told I could transfer. It is very frustrating, but stick to your guns if you want to transfer. I also had to throw out there I would resign and then reapply if they did not allow the transfer. One thing that you might have on your side with that is that you division will take a 5k loss on their profit loss sheet if you quit.

    Good Luck!!
