I am wanting to get out of steel hauling and beginning to slow my life down. I am considering going into car hauling preferably with a dually and wedge. The reason for a dually and wedge is I really want to slow down and get out of big trucks because I got a bit tired of "real trucks." I want to get a feel for the industry and get an idea of rates. I can't find anything out from load boards because they won't let me see anything without registering and I do not have an authority because I didn't need it. I would like to know how the rates are preferably for loads going down to Florida and back. Loads within a 100-150 mile radius and loads going to about 500 miles out. Specific numbers are not needed but realistic averages are helpful. I will consider the idea of a stinger after a while. Here are the numbers I have averaged. Also what do you guys use ford or dodge. I like fords but will take a dodge because it has a manual. Any and all info will be helpful.
Fuel- 10 mpg at 3.8 gallon based on 2200 miles a week = $836
Truck note= $163
Insurance ( about 8 grand a year)= $167
Maintenance reserve and repairs= $200
Total weekly running costs are 1366 a week.
Rates and starting out

My nephew had his ford ranger hauled from Manchester,tn to dallas,tx. That's about 750 miles. The car hauler charged him .85 cpm. That was 2 months ago. They were hauling 4 vehicles in total out that way.
They left out on a Sunday. Delivered the vehicles Monday. Then had a backload through Louisiana and back to Tennessee. He stays busy. -
Running in and out of Florida 0.90-1.00 pm on all miles would be about right with a wedge.
-
So .90 cpm or 1.00 for all miles don't sound that appealing, unless its per a car.
-
I think the average right now is around .35 cpm per car. Tough to do with a wedge and a dually.

Florida rates have always been snowbird seasonal unless you happen to be one of the few that are connected down there.
They have had the best weather this year in particular, so you can guess where many have gone as well. Very competitive market

Hey, I'm in Brooklyn too, near Kings Plaza, run a 3 car wedge with a Ford 7.3. The auto tranny is bulletproof. All but the first 90k of my 300k were pulling 3 cars and I have the original engine and tranny. Florida is a waste of time and money, but there's a living to be made with a 3 car in the Northeast.

Cool, we are neighbors. I live close to kings plaza too. Thanks, I know Florida is a hit or miss. If you don't mind me asking, how do you run? Do you stay within a certain radius, or run regionally? Also, would you mind giving an average rate per car and where you deliver mostly? Dealers or to people? You can pm this if you don't want to write it here.

The guy that transported my nephews truck to Dallas,Tx carried 4 vehicles. He was charging each individual customer .85 cpm for each vehicle.

That .90-1.00 doesn't really seem right. Maybe depending upon the season and where you get your loads from. I figured my running costs to be around .75 cents a mile, and to make it work I would like to hit ATLEAST 1.45 a mile if i do high miles. I was considering to do long runs when rates are good, but try to keep myself exclusively local/ regional doing no more than 400 miles in one direction.
