Shipper asking for a copy of your license?

Unfortunately, it happens all the time.

 

I'm not an O/O but it was common for me at food places and breweries...also Honda takes it when delivering.

 

Really have to bite my tongue when my license is 25 doors down, I've got your stuff that you ordered and paperwork, are you #### kidding?

 

I said this in another post as well, I have no issue giving someone the information to verify I am legally able to move their freight, but that's where it stops, NOBODY is making copies of my CDL. I paid for it not them. I had a customer demand to make a digital copy of my CDL before they would let me pull my companies trailer with their freight on it. I politely told them that there was no way they were getting a digital copy of my CDL. As far as I was concerned their freight could sit at their facility until someone else came to get it. A supervisor came out of the facility to the guard shack and demanded that I give them my license and take their freight, I again refused (I was on the phone with my manager) This supervisor said I am going to call in on you, I replied I am on the phone with my manager would you like to talk to him? He stomped off yelling I will call P&G. To which I replied, I don't work for P&G. Long and short...at some point we have to stand up for ourselves. I see no reason anyone should have a copy of my CDL which has my full name and home address on it. If they want to see it or have the number off it, fine. But with identity theft and everything else these days, their freight does not trump my right to privacy.

Oh, BTW, my manager said that policy was BS and told me to leave their freight sitting right there and they would work with our customer service team before they sent another driver to pick up the load.

 

Lots of companies are using that to thwart freight diversion. Apparently thieves are finding out where freight is going, then showing up with a truck to pick up the load to Chicago or wherever, then disappearing with the freight. Having to show a photo ID for them to keep a copy of kind of thwarts that somewhat.

 

Don't like leaving my cdl anywhere,had one place misplace it.
Lot's of places will not let u in without one.

 

I've had security officers ask to see it, but they've never copied it. I notice on higher value loads, or when working with certain shippers, I need to give them a number code before they will let me pull up to the dock. I ran into that with Ford, today. I forgot and had to go get the code from the QC before I could get a dock. Then Security wanted another look inside the box before sealing the load. Side question: Has anyone ever asked to photograph your load before you could seal it?

 

I have been asked for ID before and I just hand them my TWIC Card. Most of them ask what is this? I show them on the back that it is a Clearance from the federal goverment. After they speak with a supervisor they let me in.

 

They usually do that to cover their rear in case the freight gets damaged in transit. That way the company can't come back and try to blame the shipper to get out of paying a damage claim.
