I recently purchased an ishift 670. I did not envision driving mountains and preferred to stay within 300 miles off my home terminal. Now I have decided to make a run to Colorado to phoenix to San Diego. I do not have a manual mode on my truck(at least not on with gear selectors). My question is does the ishift hold gear on its own or do I have to manually do something to hold the gear? In other words if I am loaded at 65000 lbs going down a 6% grade foot off the accelerator in 7th gear will it hold itself or do I need to do something to hold the gear. On my lever control the top position has a m that I believe holds whatever gear your in at the time(i do not have gear selectors so I no this stand for manual but I think this position only holds my gear?) Do I throw the lever in the m position when going downhill then put it back to drive mode when finishing a grade? Again not very familiar with mountain driving with an ishift.

Yeah putting in M is lock in gear if you don't have the shift buttons. I have the same silly setup, a few words of warning, be prepared to fight for the right gear, if you have the same Ishift pattern I do you'll seldom find yourself in the right gear at the right time, especially if you happen to get into ice or snow on a grade. Keep in mind the only way to downshift is via the jake stalk pulling down past three asks for max jake power and will usually drop it 1-2 gears but you must be in auto mode and below about 1700 rpm then quickly relock the tranny before it upshifts again. I also hope you have a decent amount of mountain experience as I've found this setup tests my abilities and specific knowledge of individual highways every trip. Good luck and take your time

I run a lot of PA loads with mine granted I have the buttons that allow me to shift gears as I want, but I find that most of the time going up the grade I leave the cruise on and let it do its thing and on the way down put the Jake in 3 and its enough to hold me unless I am over 45000 in the box.

Thank you that's exactly what I discovered notmycbhandle as I was tinkering with my jake and downshifting on overpasses here in dallas. As you said hard to get the right gear as it likes to skip gears. Being under 65000 gross all the time I think as long as I am in 6 to 8th gear I will be ok for the grades I will be on. I used to drive a 10 speed been through the Eisenhower once and hwy 93 in arizona and did fine. It's been a few years though. I was also tinkering with the cruise control and cruise jake and I have to get used to not pushing on the gas once I put the cruise on(I think I would do the cruise method if I knew the routes better). Both these responses helped a lot thanks for taking the time to respond.
